The Legbar Thread!

Here are my two Roo's. The first one is huge, more golden in color, and has a huge comb that is starting to want to flop. The second is smaller, lighter in color, and has a nice erect comb. I'm guessing the second one's color is more correct? (Although personally, I think the first one is prettier).

I've been reading a bit on Greenfire's site about the different lines-Line A has the huge floppy combs, bigger size, better egg laying. B has lighter color roos, better combs, Line C is supposed to have the best crests.

Is the hmmmmmmm boys or do you think they are something else?
;O) The hmmmmm is because all I REALLY know is from the article posted by Gary Dean where Punnett said that the females have the distinct chipmunk stripes and boys blurred. But then, in chick down, what's blurred and what is distinct?

It will take a long, long time before I have expertise...however, I would say that the one definitely isn't blurred, thus I vote female. You are going to have to let us know once you can actually tell---- as they feather out, it seems that the dimorphism is really apparent.

They are beautiful. I don't recall where I heard that the lighter-the-better for Cream Legbar rooster, so you are most probably right about the correctness of the second one. I had concerns abut egg production -- but my little pullet, who just started laying, has laid 6 out of the past 7 days. (one day was shell-less though) She certainly is showing the potential for good/excellent egg production.

I'm so envious reading about your eggs hatching and seeing your beautiful birds!

I'm getting ready to order my first eggs, though as a complete newbie I'm going to let a breeder put them in his enormous incubator rather than doing it myself.
Recommendations of who to buy from would be greatly appreciated. I'd be much more comfortable going with someone approved by this board than just going by ad copy and price on eBay.

It's okay to not tell me who you don't like if that makes you uncomfortable. Knowing which breeders you do would be great. Including yourself!

Many thanks!

p.s. My purpose in raising Cream Legbars would be to perpetuate good examples of the breed in my area as well as simply to enjoy having them. I am the world's worst salesperson and do not intend to sell eggs or chicks non-locally. While it would be nice to make back my initial purchase cost, I am not buying these birds to make a profit. Given my selling nonexpertise, Cream Legbar chicks and eggs will be going for $5 a dozen by the time I have extras to sell.

Yea normanak--

I think that any of the people on this thread who sell eggs would be good choices. They have gotten eggs from greenfire farms...and have successful hatches under their belts. Probably that applies to the other Legbar thread as well.

My approach is like yours... I'm not into marketing but having excellent birds is a high priority. Good for you! Best luck...you will LOVE your cream legbars.

Hi Miss Molly,

What humidity level to you use for the first 18 days and what humidity level to you use at lockdown?

Thanks,

Ron

To be honest I just kinda wing it. I've only had 3 out of all the eggs I've started not hatch - this week 1 of 6 and 2 others last hatch but I opened the incubator on those when I should not have. This week's non-hatcher pipped but died and I had another hatch a few hours after...?..they seem pretty easy to hatch. I keep it around 45-50% mostly but it has dropped to the high 20's for short periods before I get home from work and then in the 50's for lockdown but it has spiked at 62 and gotten into the forties so I add water but only opened it once when it spiked in 70's cause I overdid the water'. This hatch 4 females n 1 male. Two of the girls may have tiny and I mean very tiny white spots and they do look "distinct' but they are all 4 chipmunked out while they male has that amorphous white blotch n blurry lighter coloring. And one girl was more red than the others reminded me of that picture from a bit back but I"d have to look n see if I can tell the difference now. Will probably stick those 6 eggs I collected in the bator then I"ll try to craigslist some- I know it will not go well around here. If I had two layers I'd ship eggs. Best hatch yet!! Think I'll sell that girl who could not swing the $50 one older female for a steal just cause I'm so happy - spread the joy

Thanks! Do those of you who sell on eBay have different names there? Or do I figure that out by town and/or email address?
