The Legbar Thread!

No, and in fact in ordinance just changed in 2010 to prohibit them. It's a real shame.

To keep it topical, here are some scary Legbar broody noises I found while looking around. [Warning! loud video!]

That's one mad broody!!

I'm a realtor, and I've had several clients who have told me that they want a house where they can have chickens, so I've gotten very, very familiar with different cities' chicken ordinances. I don't even bat an eyelash if someone says that to me. Of course, I am a little eccentric, and seem to attract other eccentric people, so, you can take this as good or bad news. LOL

How long are you all finding it's taking for your legbars to start laying? I was figuring 6-7 months, but I was talking to a friend the other day who said hers took nearly a year.

One hen started at 24, one at 26, and one at 28 weeks. Sounds like it can happen as early as 22 weeks (anyone earlier then that?) and varies widely-this is one of the things I want to work on in my breeding program.

my pullet was hatched Jan. 9th and her first egg was June 15th. She laid daily for a week after that and didn't take a break. --- I have heard that born early in the year they will lay at 6months but born LATE, let's say August....they won't lay until the following spring. Maybe your friend's legbar was born late in the summer.

That video cracks me up. I think that also shows how different the UK Cream Legbars look from the USA cream legbars. Today I reached into the nest box and got a really fierce reaction from my cream Legbar....wish I had a video camera on her at the time. LOL

I found my first Cream Legbar egg today! And my flock is actually only 4 months and 16 days old. So I'm not sure why they are laying so early but I'm not going to complain! ......

All of mine Legbars (Gold & Cream) started laying between 22-23 weeks.

Sadly I must report that I will be out of the cream legbar egg business for six months. Tonight my DH put down my beautiful rooster Reggie. I believe he injured his foot and got a systemic infection. Three of his toes were turning purplish black, he wasn't eating or drinking and barely able to move. Watching him try to move into the shade was torture. I tried penicillin injections with no response so we did what we thought was right. I feel blessed to have a husband who will do this for me when necessary. Thankfully it isn't often. I have eight eggs incubating and will put the others in until they are no longer fertile. I should hatch a male or two to grow out as a replacement. I don't bring started birds into my flock so starting from the egg up is all I can do.

Besides losing Reggie, it has been a wretched day and I am going to try to sleep.
