My three wee chicks, not quite so wee anymore. They've entered that adorable "ugly duckling" stage.

James, 4 weeks old. His wing and tail feathers are growing so fast.



Joan, 3 weeks old. Tiny little crest.



Jett, 3 weeks old. Slightly darker and warmer-colored than Joan.



The lighting came out a bit different in each photo -- not sure why. Joan looks lankier here but I think it's how they're standing.

Note: I only name my birds for record-keeping. (Yeah, right.)

Awesome demonstration of male verses female stance.
You can tell the first chick is all boy by the way he stands, and the same for the last being all girl.

I have them in the 2 end windows...so they are always in a breeze...but our mosquitoes were bad early on this year, but we've been spraying, have 2 mosquitoe magnets and a mosquito deleto, etc. ....but there are several ponds around...one by our house...a little creek about 100 yards from the house and a bigger creek another 100 yards away....so it is a constant battle. I had posted about this under the forums titled "avian pox" and a guy linked to a really good article...it said something about biting flies...I have really noticed them biting me! and have hung tons of fly strips...but again, we have a big cow pasture behind our house...

I read allot about the Vanilla scented trees for cars keeping the flys away. i haven't tried it yet but everyone swears on it. even with pasture near by they say it will work.. after all that pasture will give them somewhere to go after the vanilla drives them away.

How tolerant of other cockerels/roosters are Cream Legbars?

Temporarily I've placed my white pair with my cream trio and a couple of bantam cochin hens.(2 cockerels and 5 hens/pullets) All the legbars are under 20 weeks and the bantam cochins have them cowed right now. I was wondering if this arrangment could be maintained into adulthood? So far it's been fine because everyone is more worried about those saucy little banty hens.

I was starting to think my lil guys were pretty agressive . They always jump down on top of each other from there perch. the females and males are already jumping up doing the chest bumps challenging each other at 4 weeks old. And when i just went out to give them water 2 of the males pecked my hand and the one lil guy even flamed up his comb and maid it all red as he pecked me. I picked him up and held him, his little comb eventually turned yellow again. It was funny.

Of my four males, one was aggressive towards my son. He started chasing him regularly, so he went. Otherwise, they seem average. They work out well with each other, but were more dominant than a same age wyandotte.

I was out shuffling my legbarhorns around and thought I'd share a couple updates. It looks like all of them are crested and rose combed which is great. But the rose combs are more like an old fashioned silkie comb (the kind that was described as a rose comb with the crest that gave it a weird shape) and I think it is caused by the same reason. Rose comb + crest = funky back of comb. The pullets look good, it is the cockerels that are funky. The color is coming out as expected. The green legs on the pullets is lightening up to a yellow with a slight green tint. And it looks like I have more pullets than I thought so the cull females will be used in a production bird type pen. Still no pics, it is all rainy here today but soon!

Of my four males, one was aggressive towards my son. He started chasing him regularly, so he went. Otherwise, they seem average. They work out well with each other, but were more dominant than a same age wyandotte.

One of mine was having a hard time sharing his space with the other roos. He was pecking at me, injured a pullet and then attacked another roo (totally ripped out his crest and cause a lot of damage to his comb). My 11 year old insisted he was sweet and could easily handle him-which probably saved him from the stew pot. He now has a nice free range home with his own hens and very happy farmer who loves him. I sold him for $25.00. Works for all of us!

My first Legbars EVER hatched yesterday/last night. I need a little help sexing them. I want to make sure I'm right in my guesses.
