The Legbar Thread!

Does the average egg size vary a lot? I have purchased eBay Cream Legbar eggs from 5 different sources. They were all probably second generation from Greenfire stock.

Two sources the eggs were quite small. The other three were pretty good size.
my laying CL are from the first generation and I can't believe how fast the eggs have gotten big...from pullet sized eggs to large size in like 3-4 weeks. very impressed thus far compared to my SFHs whose eggs are still quite smalll though i hear they will get biggers.

I have been keeping track of egg size since I got my first egg on July 30. There have been 41 eggs. The chicks all came from GF in March. Some are from each of their first three lines. I will not be hatching any until they get closer to 50 grams. This morning we ate half of the first dozen. They were delicious! ALL of the larger ones (50 grams and up) had double yolks. Most of the rest in that carton are between 32 and 39 grams. I was sent some tiny eggs in the spring and only one hatched and that chick died at three days. Most of what I have gotten in the last week or so are between 36 and 42 grams. They are slowly getting bigger but still not big enough that I would bother trying to hatch some. I have read to wait until the girls have been laying for a couple months. For me, that's good advice.

My cream legbar eggs are smaller then I would like but, my hens are still young..
The eggs are fertile and hatching fine... Molly

awww guys! ive just looked through some old photos on my laptop and found one of melow when she was in the pet shop with the other hens. I wanted the Light sussex, my friend at first was going to get me the other cream legbar you can see but she didn't like it because it had a weird tail, so she came back with Melow and i couldn't be happier.

Well sadly, the eggs I ordered fro Jordan Farm never grew...I think it was due to poor handling on the part of the USPS. None of the eggs they sent ever grew at all. So perhaps high summer temps and rough handling. :( Oh well. Way back in May...before I knew much about the dangers of ebay eggs. I pre-ordered some eggs from an ebay seller. Those eggs came this past Friday...anyone else partake in that pre-sale? Any luck with those birds? I had nearly forgotten about those eggs until I got the email saying they were coming. :)

So this is my last attempt at hatching CL this year. I have the six that I have posted on here, but it seems only one of them may be worth keeping for a breeding pen, the others will go to the laying flock and the boys will be grown out and sent to Camp Kenmore. If I don't get something worth keeping from these eggs then I think I will try to get day olds or juveniles next year. I am not about to give up on my dream of having them, but I am quite frustrated and hate to even think about the money I have spent this summer trying.

I'm sorry things have gone so badly for you in your quest.

So sorry about the hatching eggs. I had such good luck with Jordan farms chicks. It must have been the USPS that affected the eggs. Hope your ebay eggs do well and you finally get your cream legbars!

Thanks everyone. I am not holding my breath with these ebay eggs. However, you never know. I found those eggs on ebay way before I found this thread and the wonderful people on here...I was naive. However, these were a pre-sale and at the time I thought it would be good if I had some chicks from my first auction and some chicks from this sale to pick the best from and breed without inbreeding. In theory it seemed great, in practice...no so much. LOL It has all been a great learning experience though and I have met some amazing people who are most kind and generous. This makes life good. :)

I think I remember seeing that Ebay pre-sale auction. That was a while ago. I didn't think Ebay allowed pre-sales like that. Good luck with them. I'm honestly leery of any eggs on Ebay unless I know they are on here.
