The Legbar Thread!

Hi, all,
Been awhile that I've had a moment to say hi. Looks like a lot of the great ideas floating around. I have gmail as a second account, which is rarely used, but I would add data if someone sets it up. Something new for me is that I now have one set (2 nest boxes) of trap nesting boxes. At first I was concerned that the girls won't go for being locked in. Then for the few days the rooster would go in, get trapped, and freak out!! He's stopped doing that. The girls all lay there, and it no longer surprises me when two manage to get trapped in the same nest box at the same time which defeats the exact parent and egg count purpose! Has only happened twice, hope they get over jumping in together! I haven't started collecting egg data, as this just began last week.
Coincidently egg production is up! Just a coincidence, but a nice one. Now I need to build another for the 2nd flock.
I have eggs in the incubator, my first hatch!

My cream legbars started making eggs in July. I waited until they were old enough to throw good eggs before selling. Now I'm excited to see what my girls give me! Keep your fingers crossed. I'm Ok with a lot of either sex, because it's an opportunity to grow and cull to the best. In some ways, isn't it, the better your cockerel the better your stock? He throws half the genetic material for all the eggs.
For those keeping data, I have a kitchen scale that goes to 5lbs and measures also in metric. If a data program begins soon, I might be able to do this. I'll be missing exact parents on this batch, but could get them on the next!
Good luck with your hatch!!! Fingers are crossed for an outstanding result.

You bring up a REALLY good point. In order to tell the exact parentage, it would take, as you have, a trap nest, or different color of hen's eggs, or a pen that contains only one hen.... Providing that there is a 'flock rooster' like we use a 'herd sire' in the cow herds. I guess we could do some general tracking - generationally...like 1st gen GFF, and next gen our own chickens.... For some knowing the exact parentage won't be a simple matter.

Rooster does contribute 1/2 the genetics. For egg color, it would take - what? knowing the egg he hatched from and knowing what the effect of his genetics are by comparing the egg color of his daughter's eggs with the color their mother lays?

Ok, I was able to get a horrible pic of a couple of the legbarhorns for everyone. They are very leghorn like in the actions- flighty and fast. I was looking at all of them and realizing that there are maybe 6 pullets and 1 cockerel with good crests. The others have crests but not the best sized. I will work on getting a pic of some of them to show the type better

What temperature do you store the eggs at?
I'm not really conscious of the temperature. I usually wait until I have at least 4 (sometimes 6) from a single hen before I incubate. My incubators are in a closet in my art studio (upstairs bedroom). I sometimes have them hang out in the kitchen on top of my canisters before I take them upstairs, but they sit in a plastic egg tray, upright, in the spare room before I stick them in the bator. Not sure what the temp of the room is - I'm sure it fluctuates. They sit on a shelf in the darkest corner of that room and then into the bator they go. I think I had one or two hatches where some eggs went to day 21 but they seem to always hatch out earlier than the hatch day. The first boy that hatched on day 19 surprised me as I was so busy that weekend I had omitted putting them in lockdown and he was in the bator with the turner still going - I had to give his legs some TLC but he's doing well now - just has a crocked toe. I also seem to be hatching more pullets now than in the spring - the other 2 pipping eggs hatched and there should be 3 girls and 1 boy in the bator this afternoon - The last egg may not be viable but I'll keep it in there until Thursday just in case.. I'm done for the year after the last 2 eggs hatch next week.... okay maybe

....

My flock is small and I'm not planning on really selling too much until next year so maybe by then I'll buy a scale and do all that record keeping. Depending on what I end up with I think I may sell a pair or two locally on craigslist at some point. I still have the juvie boy so maybe I'll use him but I'm not sure I will want to keep what the throws - he does have a good comb. Maybe I'll wait and hatch out a few of what he sires just to see. Or maybe I'll sell him off with a female CLB that I have with no crest that i was gonna use for EE's. She should be laying soon so I don't konow - I almost put him on for free just to be rid of him but...

I'm waiting for this batch to grow out and select my roosters from these and move forward at that point with my larger plans.
Gonna probably have to cull one of my BCM roos soon - he has a bum leg and it's getting worse despite the antibiotics and supports won't stay put...I think I'll be looking for a roo again next year. Those Marans are sooooooooooo mentally wearying.

Lets see some CLOSE UP flyingmonkeypoop!! Rosecombs - yeah!

Please take a second to look at my shims. Both have dark chipmunk backs and white spots on their heads. Opinions?

Thank you for your time :)

These look like boys because the spot is so large and rather diffused on the top of the head. My spotted girls have a very minute definitive spot and no blotchyness like these two seem to have on the back of the neck. If the body seems a bit blurry and not defiitive then definitely boys. I have hatched some with a bit of a stripped eye that were boys. Pics of the back would be helpful but I'm gonna say both boys...
