The Legbar Thread!

So these are a couple of my F2's from my younger girl who has the cream hackles. One is truly cream and the other and a third not pictured are a very very pale gold. I have 7 others that are in the brooder but no hackles yet to evaluate. I think 3 may be sisters to these and the others are from my older golden girl so I'm interested to see the difference. The older F2 pair from the golden girl has one being just a bit darker and the other a bit more golden (about 20 weeks). Hopefully I'll have at least 2 - 3 cream hackled girls to breed forward next spring waiting to see what turns up to evaluate who will stay on. The entire body of the cream girl is more gray and lacks the brown tinge on the feathers of the more golden girl. The boys are gonna take more time before I can make any cuts but keeping my fingers crossed that I'l have at least one to breed back to his mom to see what turns up. Not worried about floppy combs at this point just basic upright type, hoping for good tails and correct color.

Pretty pullets blackbirds13 -- showing a lot of lightness!!

Wow, they look really good! Great job! Have you noticed the chickens free ranging on your rd? Manny has seen them many times. He thinks they're from the horse farm right next to you. I love free ranging however am concerned for you as they seem to be wandering fairly far and I understand how you are about biosecurity.
Hey,

That house is quite a bit further down from where we are and we are. Now those wild flying birds with great talons and sharp beaks...nothing keeps those bad boys out.
I do love seeing their birds when I'm jogging. and so does Ant. Part of why I so love our little neck of the woods even if NH is not my preferred part of the world to exist in.

ETA - reread like a little TMI.

GaryDean...I will have to investigate the crest color issue. I lost so many chicks this year my ability to really gauge some things is slim so far but I'm starting to formulate some ideas that I can't quite put words to yet. I have some pics I can run through but some of the early chick pics were on my iphone when it went kaput so missing some important data.

I haven't seen the neighborhood hawk family in 2-3 weeks, the crows are back as well. I decided to let them free range and opened the door to the CL coop. They're so used to being inside it took them 3 days before one jumped down. Now they free range within about 20 feet of the their coop. I keep scanning CL for a 12x12 or so dog kennel to put around the coop so they can be safe. I've already got the net to drape over the top of the coop and attach to the kennel when I find one. I started to take pics of them however everytime I moved towards them they moved further away. There are 6 girls and 2 boys now.

Looks like a nice healthy flock!

x2 - nice birds puglady. I know I have to many. May put a pair or two on craigslist to see what they will bring. But looks like at least one of the girls is crest-less so may put her up with a male to see what happens. Not sure what I want to do as they are from my golden girls who lays a larger egg so I was thinking of starting a layer/barnyard mix flock for next year if I decided to try the swaps. Too many ideas running around in my head. My Jubilee boy started crowing - I love the sound. He is HUGE and only about 20 weeks. Think I need to convince the hubby to replace the freezer we lost in the fire for next year. I may indeed have some good meat birds between the orps and the marans.

Hope you had a good day at the swaps.

Sounds like a good cross, more tradidional roo's instead of the hatchery meat birds. Longer to grow out but sound like they should be huge birds. I had 20 boo boo roos and mama's boys processed a couple of weeks ago by someone in Derry. He's got a good set up. My newest general flock roo sounds like a short version of an old car horn, aooogah, aooogah. He's not CL and its a long story but he's got wry tail and will need to be culled. He tried to mate one of my general flock the other day, fell off and did a somersault, not good. I definitely don't want to breed that in, even to the mixes.
The CLs are free ranging more and more which is great to see. I'd kept them in for so long in fear of the hawk they were slow to explore. I'll definitely have to get the kennel and net up next year by Mid-March or so though. I don't want to loose any to the hawk family. Looking at the calender my crew will be 20 weeks old the week of Christmas. I'm not expecting anything until Feb/March though. Sending you a PM as well.

My Cream Legbar hen just started laying! I'm so excited.

I visited her on the farm this morning and she laid a tiny pullet egg on Thursday, and a larger pointy egg probably yesterday.

The blastodisc in the larger egg didn't show signs of fertility yet. I had just put her back with the roo on Wednesday, and he immediately tried to mate with her (but not successfully while I was watching).

I got both the hen and roo fron BYCer Phage who got the hen as a hatching egg from Boykin2010.

Congratulations!!! First eggs are always so exciting IMO.

So interesting to know the lineage of your chickens.... I think Boykin got his from GFF.... I haven't seen either Boykin or Phage on here lately---- What's up with the chickens y'all? Hope everything is going fine.
