The life and health of the Golden Comet

I am no Doctor, but I can not see a way to reduce a golden comets egg laying other than possibly not feeding it good---which I am sure you would not do. As far as stopping it----without a operation from a Doctor----no way to stop that either.

Just for additional info. I got a friend(owns a Chicken Auction) that Loves Golden Comet layers. He tries to keep a couple hundred and has been for many years. He is very chicken educated as far as breeds and experience. I talked with him about getting some of these and He Feels they are the best layers, but he said they need to be replaced after a couple years---before problems start. But his chickens are not his pets either. What kind of problems---I did not ask because I always get rid of mine around 2 years too.

Theur bodies usully do it ont heir own.Sometimes it just happens, even young hens can die from egg binding and aometimea their system just messes up.

Not all hens do that.i have had different breeds of hens stop do to daylight hours,or even continue.

Thanks,
They are 4 now, in May will be going on their fifth year and the two healthier ones are back to laying daily I think. Still getting XL to Jumbo eggs. Those two are both very youthful and healthy .... other than the tendency to go broody.
At one point did yours stop laying?

What if I put light blocking shades on their windows and drew the shades during winter months for X amount of hours a day it is very dark???
You just do not seem like the type person that would keep your chickens in the dark for most of the winter months..

Think of your chickens like a hybrid Squash plant----If you feed it, take care of its going to produce like it was designed to do----if you do not want as much as it can produce----get a regular one---not one that was designed to be high production.

Golden comets are used in Many Chicken houses---they are designed to lay a lot of eggs in their first 2 years----most All chicken houses replace them every 2 years----not that they want lay for years to come, but they will start laying less and start having health problems----which is bad for 5000 to 50,000+ production houses. I would choose another breed----just saying!
