The life and health of the Golden Comet

Thanks,
They are 4 now, in May will be going on their fifth year and the two healthier ones are back to laying daily I think. Still getting XL to Jumbo eggs. Those two are both very youthful and healthy .... other than the tendency to go broody.
At one point did yours stop laying?

Mine will be four this spring and the only time they have stopped laying was mlts and probably point of lay.5 is impressive though.

I mean it honestly sounds like an individual burx problem so I mean getting a couple more wouldnt hurt.

Some ways to slow egg production in birds (from Avian vets and Ext groups):

Hormone therapy (I would unlikely do)
Induced molting (probably would not do ... but there is some interesting science in the papers that might prove helpful)
Induced broody

Will comment more on the induced molting later. Inducing broodiness is an interesting idea. I have read Comets rarely go broody. I have two who are quite prone .... they are the two that are the healthiest!

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to say I have 7 different breeds and am adding 4 more this spring. I like variety. The golden comets are absolutely the friendliest chickens we have. Mine too are like puppies, follow us around, jump in our laps or in the car. None of my other breeds are nearly so friendly. I absolutely adore them. Was bummed to hear about health issues and will keep fingers crossed!

I got almost 20 different breeds of hens, and I have friendly and aloof chicken in almost all types. My “puppy like hens” are the RIR, Black Copper Marans, EEs, welsumer and the famous Barred Rocks, my 2 leghorns are even so friendly you have to pick them up & pet them before they let you go. My Speckled Sussex will latched her beak on my pant leg if you don’t pet her.
