~*~The Life Story of Apple the Budgie~*~

Chapter Eight

I was left in that nest for a few minutes with the other chicks, who were older than me and already fledged and were just staying in the box just for fun, glared at me and talked among themselves.
I huddled in a corner and looked around, scared.
Soon enough, though, the parent came back. Seeing me, she turned around and purposefully ignored me.
She talked in such a small whisper to her chicks, I didn't hear her from only a few inches away.
Though her chicks were fledged and were perfectly capable of eating themselves, she regurgitated seeds and fed them.
I didn't dare say anything, just tried to hide in my corner and hope she would keep ignoring me.
She then turned around and left.
The chicks looked at me and laughed quietly among themselves.
I wondered what was going to happen.
Adopted?
Abandoned?
Why would Mommy abandon me?
Maybe the human was wrong.
But then, he probably knew more about what was going on than I did.
I just wished I could go back.
I'll never be bad for the rest of my life if I could go back.
I was hungry, and they obviously weren't going to feed me.
For a second, I thought I could sneak out again and eat for myself, but I didn't want to after getting into so much trouble.
Besides, I don't even know how to eat.
I looked at the older chicks snuggled up to each other sleeping.
Lucky them.
