I have a silkie mix cockerel who I spend time with and handle regularly. Today he started a new behavior and I was curious to know what it means, but couldn't find anything online. Note this is my first bird, so I am learning.
It is a normal thing for him to jump into my lap and get comfy, but this evening when he was in my lap I was rubbing his back and neck (as usual) and he just laid down flat, relaxed his wings (so they drooped a bit but weren't spread) and stretched his neck out and just laid his head down on my lap. He was making soft noises. It was just funny because it seemed more like something a puppy would do lol. What does this behavior mean?

He loves you! He felt relaxed enough to just melt lol. Careful next thing you know he will be doing the wiggle dance on your lap. That's what my 5 year old calls it. I haven't explained the birds and bees to her yet. So she thinks the rooster is wiggle dancing with the hens.

Hey, y'all! My world has gotten crazy bad and I have been remiss in getting pictures to those that wanted better shots of the silkies. I think the new plan is if you are interested, PM me about which ones you want to see and I will bring those to let you pick in person. Also, if you buy two or more the price is lowered. I need to empty out some of my pens as life is about to get crazier. So soery for the delay.

Hey, I have a newbie question
idunno.gif
... I am building a run for our new chickens and modifying the old large brooder into a coop (enclosing it with nesting boxes inside and a way out into the run. I've posted pics of the inside here recently with the chicks. What I have here is what is done so far. I am expanding the run area to widen it about 6-8' from where it is now. I either need to enclose the whole thing with a roof (all chicken wire) or learn to clip their wings, so they don't migrate to the neighbor's rather large flock. Right now we only have six chicks (almost 4 weeks old) but we may end up with more at some point.

The question: Would it be better to make an enclosed run, or clip wings?

Oh, and I've not been here much due to starting back to college a couple of weeks ago. I'm re learning pre-Calculus after 31 years! Only two classes this summer down at Vol State in Gallatin, then a full schedule starting Fall in hopes of getting my degree in either physics or Electrical Engineering (at least Master level).

Thanks, all!

The preliminary run by the coop (which will be enclosed, with chicken wire around the bottom)
You can see the post on the back fence line where the run will end and come down the slight slope.
Then it will angle down to the coop.

There's a faint line where I've dug out the grass where I want the fence line, then diagonal to the coop. With a gate, of course.

Enclosed run !!!!

That will also protect them from all sorts of things like hawks, cats , coons etc.

Whereas wing clipping just makes them easier for the above to eat for lunch :(
Plus it is an ongoing chore, plus there is always that small risk somebody might get hurt during a clipping.

Just my personal opinion of course, and everyone's situation is diff. so what works for me might not for you, but that is my 2cents worth on the subject.

Everyone's 2 cents works for me, thanks! I am way too new at this, though I did raise Cockatiels and African Greys at one time. All advice helps!!

Hi! Cleaned out our shed....I have a collection of older childrens bikes and scooters, some good shape, some bad, some rust, some easily rehab-ed.....they've been sitting in the shed for years. Parents should really check them out for safety before your child heads down the street! I also have an Americare PPX propane exchange tank. It was left to us by the house's previous owners, so I know NOTHING about it, except that I don't need it:) I have no idea if it is safe or has issues. It may even have a little propane in it...... Finally, I have a bunch of wire....chicken, I think, maybe some sheep? Some is a little rusty, some is fine. I hate to throw it in the dump, but my husband doesn't need it. Shoot me an email if you want to pick anything up. I'll delete the items when they are gone. Thanks! Nolensville Rd (google map) (yahoo map)
