The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hey there folks. Hope yell are all doing good. Thread has been busy last few days... for the past week I have been up and down. I've caught some sort of cold and I haven't felt like doing anything... Work drains the only energy I have. This weather has kicked my but and I am ready for it to go for good:(

Hey Countrypunk! Was wondering why we hadn't heard from you lately. Hope your feeling better. This winter has whooped me too! I've never been through a winter like this here.

Me either! If I had to deal with this EVERY winter and this many birds I would quite chickens. My neighbor has been hoodwinked into taking care of 3 rescued horses they new owners seem to have abandoned..... she has been watering and feeding them with her own hay! WTH? Sad.....

I am kinda looking forward to thinning down. Looks like my MFL are sold, maybe my SLW and Cuckoos. My roo guy said he might buy my BR if I still have them. That is clearing out several pens so I can fill them up with new pullets.... LOL.

Get better Alex!

If the weather will break we can fix the waterers out back and that will save some work.

Ya know there was a reason I moved south 15yrs ago...being from western NY these cold temps.....just they had more snow up there. I def don't miss the snow yuck

multiple feet of snow is normal. There is so much to do outside and I do not have the motivation to get out there in the cold! Countrypunk hope you get to feeling better!

All right. The neophytes need help again. We went out of town for a few days and returned to one of our ladies acting sick (puffed up, lethargic, and diarrhea) The poo stuck in her feathers included some bright green. The only thing green they have had lately was some kale scraps a week ago. Otherwise- just layer pellets and some scratch grains (the chick sitter way over fed the scratch grains but that shouldn't have been a problem).

So I brought her in the house and quarantined her with some water and feed. I put electrolytes and duramycin in the water. she lived about a day and a half in quarantine. Any ideas?

I lost a BS Maran roo last week to the cold, it sucks, and the marans combs have frostbite....sucks

Actually, this was a BCM also. We got it from Donna in July and it had just started laying. We had managed through the bad cold with a light bulb in the coop and vasoline on the combs. The remaining seven ladies appear fine. Hopefully it wasn't anything catching.

Green poo is usually a liver problem of some sort.... I think that is right... maybe someone with more experience will chime in. Could she have been egg bound?

I don't think so. she wasn't spending any time in the box trying to lay. I also ran warm water over her bum for a good while trying to get as much of the poo off her feathers as possible. It was all clumped up under her vent. She felt like she had lost weight and I'm not sure she was eating. She was acting sick but was showing no signs of pain or distress other than the poo.
