I am not setting that eggs. Large eggs don't hatch. Not sure why but might because they never get big enough to feel the need to hatch and run out of yolk and die. If you have one that is SOLID Black it could have been from a Sex Linked cross with my barred EE OR it could be pure and split for lavender. I have a white Am in with the Lav Am so they would be pure.... but who knows. I need to pull him and her out and put them in a pen. I wanted white ams but not sure I want to work on that one anymore.

My chicken coop preparation continues. I earlier asked a question about some cedar boards I used in the new coop. I have sealed the boards and you can no longer smell them so I hope all is well with that dilemma. I won't use any more, that's for sure.

Now my thoughts turn to litter. I have read extensively and it seems the general consensus is clean construction grade sand is the best litter. I am curious you guys thoughts on this, as well as what are some middle TN. sources you have found for this sand? I'm in Mt. Juliet.

April 25 is 'D' Day for the chicks arrival. I am really getting anxious to have all my "chicks in a row" by then.

Thanks for all the help. I hope to some day be a contributor and not just a pest with questions!

Definately not a pest with questions!! It's nice to have a place with chicken people with all sorts of experiences to ask, tis how we learn. I have thought about using sand in my nest boxes I was going to just get the play sand....but am eager to see what answers you get

but I am gonna keep pine shavings I think everywhere else....someone will chime in soon I think Donna uses sand...There is a guy in Mt Juliet that I got my Cream Legbar hatching eggs from he used sand in his nesting box and it just seemed cleaner.

ETA good luck on the coop construction need pics when you are finished!

TNBEARCHICK, I notice that you have that ultra-rare Russian or Polish or Czech chicken (making a guess based on the name). Was that your birds' eggs a couple of weeks ago on Ebay? I can't find any info on this breed. Can you fill us in on them?

I know!! Every flappin' bird there was $18-$20 not matter what they were or what condition they were in. That's why I said that I had massive sticker shock when I went there; compared to the previous auction!

We went to the one down the road from Bluegrass out by Elkton. It only happens in the Spring and Fall. We bought ours from Bluegrass last year. Probably heading there again once the coop is finished (April auction).

I did get a good deal on my rabbit hutches, but other than that, it was a tad ridiculous all the way around. (The pretzels and apple cider rocked!!! LOL)

Hi Holcombes Chick, I am just 30 minutes north of Nashville so we must be close to next door. You need to talk to Chickensmart from Portland. If you are wanting a good roo you need to talk to her right away because her roo guy is coming for them on Saturday. She has Barnvelders, Barnaucanas (Olive Egger), Silkies, BCM Olive Eggers and more.

I'm pretty set on cemanis but ty

I understand, I think they are so cool too. But short of winning a multimillion dollar lottery, there is no hope for me to have those for at least 10 years while the numbers come up and the $$$ go down. Seeing that I am over 50 now (just barely) I don't have time to wait 10 years for anything. I want to spend 10 years breeding something not waiting to breed it.
