The Middle Tennessee Thread

To all of those wanting to go to the exotic livestock auction in Cookeville. here is a fair warning!

People bring in sick and dying birds in all day long what they are sick from can vary from worms or mites to
avian influenza or marek's.

There is no one at the doors to test ANY birds.

and everyone there are cigarette smoking, potty mouthed, rednecks that talk all day long about who's rooster would win in a fight!!

I know the people that own the place and trust me, they do not take any better care of their animals at home than what they do at the barn.

There are rarely any healthy birds that come into the barn and once they do come into the barn they catch something from other birds.

They are not many pure breeds that come in either everything is just barnyard mixes. Most common pure breds you see come in is either Silkies or Old English Games.

Not worth the risk if you ask me!

Here are pictures of the nest boxes we make. We have a square box and what we call a topper box. They can be used alone or you can stack them, the top of the topper is angled so they do not roost on it. They are made of food grade plastic and can be cleaned and disinfected with ease. I love the fact that no bugs can hide in cracks and crevices like a wooden box. They don't rot and are not affected by cleaners.

how much are they. I'm in the process of building 3 coops and will need 12-15 nest boxes. Haven't really decided which boxes I want yet.

My two little cockerels are still available. I bought hatching eggs and learned afterward that there are some Rhode Island Red and black star hens with 30 black and blue australorp hens and three BBS Australorps. I think there is still BBS orpington characteristics because the eggs were HUGE. I do not need the cockerels. I want to breed these pullets to my Australorp roosters to ensure that I breed the Orp characteristics out.

These guys are free. They are strong, healthy, and have never been exposed to my juvenile or adult chickens. They have been handled multiple times daily. Hatch date was 4/19, they are 3 weeks old. Located in Loretto TN. I will meet you in Maury, Wayne, Giles, or Lawrence County.

I have 4 of these in XL size with the slanted roof and LOVE them! I use them in my breeding pens and remove them when I quit breeding and use the pens for grow out. I did cut an access hole in the back of each of mine. They are really great - highly recommend them!
