Any barred breed, as long as the male is barred all get that gene. If the female is barred but the male isn't only the roos get the barred gene.
Isn't that right Oh Wise One ? I tried to pay attention in class. LOL

Is it that way with any barred breed? Or just Marans?

ANY Barred or Cuckoo. I am not 100% on the chromosomes names with chickens but if hens are wz then roos are zz (that is opposite of humans btw) and the barring is on the z chromosomes so if the hen has barring she make all the genders and it goes to only roos.

Yes grasshopper you are correct.

I will add though, not all barred roos have 2 copies of the barring gene. If that is the case he will pass that off to 50% of the chicks and it is not a gender thing. 50% pullets would be barred and 50% cockerels would be barred.

Is that clear as mud now.

Ooh! This is good info! I never knew! Thank you, Oh Wise One!

Barring was maybe the FIRST genetic thing I HAD to figure out. I had to study it for a good while but once I got it other chicken genetic stuff was easier. I just extrapolated from what I knew on barring and figured out how it was different.... Like Choc.... similar but different. Choc is also similar to Lavender..... ok that could all get confusing.

Hey gang.... Does anyone know anything about Homestead poultry in Delano TN. ? I just saw their ad on craigslist. Their prices are reasonable I think, but I haven't heard of them and don't want to support a business that doesn't take care of or care about their birds.

If you are trying to determine only barring this is correct. But everyone keep in mind that for sex linked and especially for autosexing it takes more genes other than just correct barring. Several gene pair combinations are involved, especially for autosexing.
So while barring is linked to sexing it is not the only factor.
Creating sex linked chickens based on barring is easy but they do not breed true for future generations, they are a hybrid. It's more complicated than that to create autosexed chickens that breed true.
This is the reason those of us who are geneticists are anal and weird. Lol

Homestead Poultry would be me! You are welcome to come out and see my operation, believe me my birds are well cared for, I spend hours and hours each day taking care of the birds, they are all well cared for and well fed, kept in clean enviroments, chicks are brooded in a good size brooder building. I run a closed flock, never buying outside birds, when I want to add new breeds or change out roos, I order eggs from well know breeders. I am sure I spend more money and time on my birds than I do on myself! Just come on out and look. Thanks!

Oh I think I got Americana's from you 3 years ago? Are you close to the Mennonite farm area? If so I still have some of your hens. They all laid large and jumbo blue eggs. But a couple didn't have beards. I liked them because they where bigger than some others I have gotten from other farms around the area.

Beatrice is the only chicken I have had with this color combo. Every hatch I hope for a white/black brown chick with no luck ;-)

Most are Scarletts color.
