The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hey gang.... Does anyone know anything about Homestead poultry in Delano TN. ? I just saw their ad on craigslist. Their prices are reasonable I think, but I haven't heard of them and don't want to support a business that doesn't take care of or care about their birds.

Homestead Poultry would be me!   You are welcome to come out and see my operation, believe me my birds are well cared for, I spend hours and hours each day taking care of the birds, they are all well cared for and well fed, kept in clean enviroments, chicks are brooded in a good size brooder building. I run a closed flock, never buying outside birds, when I want to add new breeds or change out roos, I order eggs from well know breeders.  I am sure I spend more money and time on my birds than I do on myself! Just come on out and look. Thanks!

I just got some Crele Polish for her! Great birds, Fine Honest Woman! Highly recomend. :frow Delinda

Quote: If you are trying to determine only barring this is correct. But everyone keep in mind that for sex linked and especially for autosexing it takes more genes other than just correct barring. Several gene pair combinations are involved, especially for autosexing.
So while barring is linked to sexing it is not the only factor.
Creating sex linked chickens based on barring is easy but they do not breed true for future generations, they are a hybrid. It's more complicated than that to create autosexed chickens that breed true.
This is the reason those of us who are geneticists are anal and weird. Lol

Sex Links are a one hit wonder. You can't use the roos for much else since they will not breed true like a reg barred rocks. Most sex Links are a cross too. Use a hen with silver (also Sex lined) and cross with another bird like a NH and you will get sex links too.... but not for breeding. Lots of people think since they own sex links they can breed sex links and you can't.

Autosexing is a WHOLE other ball game entirely. Although some think barred rocks are autosexing and that does not hold true for heritage birds.... I also would not try to sex my cuckoo marans either and they are considered an autosexing breed too. Some are more obvious than others. CCL, Rhodebars, Bielefelders those are all obvious.

These "should" be obvious. IF They are bred correctly. Too many have been "improved incorrectly". Yes, that's an oxymoron. They are being screwed up pretty bad because people don't understand how autosexing genetics works, and because they think perpetuating what others have done is ok. GFF admits to genetics mistakes and lack of genetic knowledge with the Rhodebars they brought in. It is taking many generations to rectify those problems.
When purchasing an autosexed bird always require a hatching day pic and pics of both parents at hatching and as adults.

If they request it from me they will not get it LOL.  I hatch over a hundred chicks a week and can't take pictures of them all.

I am very anal. I have only 2 breeds and one is Rhodebars. I hatch about 50 every 5 days. Each and every Rhodebar chick gets photographed and categorized.
Did I mention I am anal? ;-P

I hatch and sell black sex link and true cinnamon queens. I have people who call or email and want a male and a female CQ for breeding more CQs. I have to go through the entire hybrid sex-link lesson.

I've passed your place on the way to needle eye many times and wanted to stop. last year there was a flock of just heart stoppingly beautiful guineas
roaming in the front yard. what do you sell? i may not be able to get anything this year as I'm committed to SBEL and RIR for my new layer flock.
