The Middle Tennessee Thread

I'm on another Tn thread, but I'm thinking this is a more appropriate place for me? I'm in Jamestown and would love to meet a few chicken friends close to me :)

I have blue, black and splash Silkies, Sizzles, White Japanese, Black Spanish Turkeys and recently acquired some Pearl Grey guinea keets! My Silkies and Sizzles are the only ones laying/hatching right now if anyone might be interested in trades. I also have several assorted bantams looking for homes as well (an extra white Jap cockerel, a trio of OEGB, a trio of Millie Fleur D'Uccles-that look like 3 pullets to me, a bantam pullet of unknown breed- thinking a golden Phoenix, a Silkie that I believe to be a cockerel and a Sizzle cockerel) if anyone is interested ;)

Anyone near me (Coffee County) have day olds or close to it that they are keeping? I have a chick that hatched and i have a feeling it might be the only one to hatch. I hope not but if so I would really like it to go to someone that has friends for her.

Where is Jamestown? What are you close to?

First: A major problem is Over Use of Antibiotics. Colds are Viral not Bacterial and drugs only cause more problems in the long run. You lower your RESISTANCE when medicating with Bacterial Drugs and in the end you either need a more potent anti-biotic and/or stronger application. Be aware of what is called Bone Marrow Depression. You can cause physical harm to bones and blood parts with over medication; thus let nature help you resolve naturally if possible.

Getting KEETS by mail: Some folks claim XRAY harms the eggs in transit and that reduces the amount of eggs that complete the cycle in your incubator. I worked in the Radiology industry and much of what is said is bunk. X-ray can do cellular damage when exposure is over a period of time, not an nanosecond. The reduction of 30-40% is two fold; one; the eggs were not fertilized by a male and two: Shipping> Packing too loose and handlers tossed the cartons around. If the eggs arrived in good shape, the chances of hatching over 50% are fairly good, but folks are too eager to start incubation the same day. Eggs need to sit idle in a room temp. of 75-80 degrees 50% humidity for 24 hours. During that period, the incubator should be running at 99.5 degrees 40-50 Humidity, and use an egg turning device. It takes 29 days, unlike chickens with 21 days. Day 26-27-28 to #29 it is best to lay the eggs on their side on the screen floor of the incubator. Some folks use foam egg cartons for the last 3 days. They cut the bottom 1/4 " of each holder to allow for air circulation and moisture. Increase humidity to 50-60% and leave alone. The chicks make it out OK, and they climb down to the open screen. No worry about Water. They last 24 hours just fine on the nutrients from the yoke, but they can be moved to a temperature controlled environment with food and water anytime after the chicks are standing on their own.

Jamestown is near Cordell hull dam in east th near ky. My dad's family is all out that way. We have family unions downtown at my cousins restaurant.

Never had a guinea egg go longer tan 26 days..... always lockdown on day 23 or sooner.

The ones I've hatched in bators always go 28 days like clockwork - lockdown at 25 days. Very high % hatches.

These things are hardy! I've had clutches hatch in the pouring ration in tall grass and they are amazingly resilient. I no longer use a bator for guineas because they hatch so many on their own. I give away hundreds every year. But give them away young because they will come back if you don't.
