The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hi, I have a light blue egg layer. I was told she was araucana. She is about 10 months old. I would like to trade with brown egg layer who is about same age.

Please text me if interested @901-270-5557. I can send pictures from my phone.I am in Memphis, TN.

Thanks

I bought these keets as hatchlings and am listing some for sale on Craigslist...am curious what color they are? 3 are speckled grey and 5 are pearly looking......

One of my pullets got killed today by a neighbor's daughter's dog. We have never liked that dog. But she got out of the house unintentionally and some of my pullets were out of the run and in our yard and she went after them. The neighbors got the dog. The father actually brought his gun to shoot the dog but his daughter got her up first. Can't really blame anybody. It's what dogs do and I'm surprised things have gone so well so far. We just got chickens for the first time this last spring. She died in my arms. It was odd. She didn't have a mark on her, just a little blood on her beak. There were quite a few feathers around but they were not hers and I'm not for sure who they belonged to. Nobody seemed to be missing too many. She must have had bad internal injuries because she only lived a few minutes after I picked her up. She laid pretty blue eggs and had two sisters that looked so much like her that I had not given them specific names but was just thinking this morning that I needed to put colored bands on them to tell them apart so I could name them.

So sorry…..we had our favorite hen killed by my daughters dog….I didn't see it as "that's what dogs do" I was furious and upset and that's ok….I also made the dog leave my house and go stay with the other grandmother.

Thanks. If it was our dog we probably would get rid of it. That dog has lots of poor qualities. It doesn't live there all the time. The neighbors felt really bad that it happened so what can you do? Just be sad, I guess. Thankful it wasn't my favorite.

What can you do? You can have the neighbors compensate you for every bird that dog kills. When it hits them hard in the pocket, folks are much more likely to make sure their pets don't accidentally get out....

Sorry about your chicken though, its happened to me several times and it stinks :hugs

True. My neighbor magically figured out how to keep her dog home when I pointed out that the other neighbor shot loose dogs and that I would have to start charging her for every bird her dog killed. Somehow she was able to figure out how to confine it then.

And keep in mind... This is TN. The law here is very much in favor of livestock. If it's on my property and harassing my stock is perfectly legal for me to shoot it. That said, my Italian mama prevent that from ever being an issue thank goodness. ;-)

They offered to pay for the chicken and my husband quickly said no. But I imagine they will try to compensate in some way. I really wouldn't know how much she was worth but she was a good layer so far.
You know I expected from what I have read for the egg production to be dropping off as the days get shorter but I have 16 probable layers, my two CCL girls still aren't really red in the comb and wattles yet, and I am getting 13-14 eggs a day. The most blue eggs in one day I have gotten is 4 out of now 5, not counting the pure CCL pullets. I've been pretty impressed with the fact that the Barred Rocks lay nearly every day. I usually get 9-10 brown eggs out of 10 BRs and 1 BLRW. Over all having chickens has been great. I love how pretty they are when they are out of the run and in the yard. I love that when I go out to see them they all come running to me as fast as their short legs can carry them. I guess I am going to have to clip their wings to get them to stay in the run until I am able to watch them while they are out. They so love to be out. The ones that can will fly over a 6 foot fence.
