Yes, that exactly. The females make a "buckwheat" sound (though my kids say it sounds like they're saying butt crack). The males is more like a chirp chip. My male also has much bigger wattles than the females, but I'm not sure if it works that way for everyone.
I find I don't care for them either. Some days I find their antics funny, but most of the time, not so much. So, they're looking for a new home.

I have heard about the wattles. I also know it will not hold true 100%. The tones I knew about too but I don't have time to listen to them and ID them that way. Plus they all look alike after awhile.

Guinea would not have been my first choice but the ticks were eating us alive at the farm. Know we LOVE them because of the bug control of the bug patrol. LOL. We have a lot of land so they don't bother us with the noise. We don't know they are there unless they alert to something.

I don't really care what my hen to cock ratio is so it is not a big deal. People want them sexed for some reason and I can't.

We have a lot of acreage and the guineas have never been to the house or trust me is pull out the .22
We got them for the same reason. .. tick control when we began fencing in 50 acres and had 20+ ticks to pull off each night. They reduced the population of ticks so they're allowed to stock around. But we sure don't ever feed them and they got anywhere near our house I wouldn't tolerate them.
Since we give away hundreds of keets a year I feel no need to provide sexing. Lol. I'm just glad to get rid of them.
And for some reason the Maremma don't like them, so they pretty much just sleep in the rafters of the barn at night and spend their days in the woods.

I will be doing a final inventory for my trip to Knoxville. If anyone still wants in just PM me. We are going to try to get the camper on the truck this week so I can FILL that long bed UP! I have a few orders and I will have them boxed and labeled for easy access along the way. I either meet on the way down or on the way back. We are only going for the one day on Saturday.

I wish mine would stay away from the house! We have 48 acres, and they'll stay right around the house ALL day. It drives me crazy. They scream at me whenever I come outside, I can't stand it anymore. We started with 16, and lost some to predators. Last week we had 9, and I decided to process the 4 extra males. They were pretty quiet for about a day, and then went right back to their same 'ol routine. Seriously, if they don't find a new home before my next day off of work, I'm going to butcher them. Thats how much they're bothering me. We have fields and woods, and they just hang out under my porch all day and yell their heads off whenever I open the door. Guineas are not for me, I don't care how many ticks they eat. I have enough chickens and turkeys to take care of those anyway.

I got guineas last spring to take care of our tick problem as well. I started with 8 and am down to two. I'm hoping that those two give up and find more fertile pastures. They make me crazy! They scream non-stop and pretty much actively look for ways to die. I'll make do with just chickens once these two are gone. They were a really bad idea. Arg!

It makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one who isn't a guinea fan. Everyone around here thinks they're the bees knees, and when I've commented that I don't care for them, they look at me like I've just grown a second head or something....

HAHA!!!!! Mine do wander all over. Even to other neighbors houses..... no one is complaining thank goodness.

LOL, LOL, LOL!!! That's hilarious! They do kinda actively look for ways to die don't they? I got 16 in July, finally got a barn up for them to stay in, in Nov., got them locked in there full time and waiting until I can let them free range...most said wait 6-10 weeks so they know to go back there at night. Luckily, the barn is far far from our home, but we have a terrible tick problem here, and this summer the horses were covered in ticks...even now I'm pulling bunches of the demons off of them, EVERYDAY!! I really hope that come spring they will feast on those **** things and get rid of them!! To me, the noise they make would be worth it if they eat all the dang ticks!!
