Merry Christmas BYCers. I got a broody for Christmas and I didn't ask Santa for that. I thought the new puppy was quite enough.

When they all start laying I should have around 20 or so layers. I can't wait!!
Your baby's are so cute! Good luck. My last hatch I did an experiment and picked out only the "round" eggs from my hens to hatch. And low and behold. Everyone of them turned out to be a pullet!!
I might try that next time just for the heck of it, I almost always get fewer pullets so I'm up for any old farm's wives tails as to how to fix that.

Awwww, you got double cuteness.

I felt the same way too! Especially after the previous hatch was ALL Roosters!!!!

I find that I hatch way more cockerels in the late summer though till the first of the year then it goes the other way after the first of the year I get more pullets.... so all in all it evens out.

I would take extra free cockerels if need be. We just let them roam around here.

A question for the veterans. We decided to expand a bit this year and have currently enough money to buy a breeding set of either turkeys or pigs. Does anyone have a thought process as to which would be better to start with? We would get the other in about March. Any input would be helpful, thank you!

Another question I have is about two Easter Eggers that I have. They last beautiful blue eggs, slightly on the green side, but pretty. Who should I breed them to to keep the color going?

I also have a large mixed pen with ladies only that we call it our egg pen, but none of them are laying, thoughts as to why? They are of she and others that were hatched at the same time lay. I don't see then picking on each other any more and we move their pen every day to fresh grass.

Unless you have a supplemental light source for them, they may not lay very well for you until the days are a little longer come Spring . How old are they?
