The Middle Tennessee Thread

I wish I could help... but I don't know. I've not yet experienced any of that. Hope you get the answers you need. If it were mine, I'd probably cull, but I'm kind of a hard nose ol' country guy. Looking forward to seeing what everybody else says.

I have no idea what us going on. I am sorry I have never had one

Can you manipulate in back in place? I had a slipped tendon goose this year...with lots of patience and physical therapy he has improved so much that you can't tell him from the others.

I would probably cull but that is just my opinion.

So ladies... I've got a friend that is starting up an organic meat and egg farm... if we needed some incubators, would any of you be willing? This idea is really in it's infancy, but we are strongly considering it. We'll be doing cornish X for the meat and RIR for the eggs. Are any of ya'll interested? It will be around first of the year before I'll need help. So that gives us that much time to figure out compensation, plus there are 2 other guys involved. I have to have a strong case to talk them into something. Do any of you have experience with hatching this way? What I'm thinking is I would purchase eggs and have them delivered to your address, you hatch them, and we pay you a set fee for the number of eggs you set. I'll come pick the chicks up. Or ya'll grow them till laying age and we have a set price to buy them from you for. Give me ideas... I need help here. I'm not against our farm being a co-op, it will be already, but just figuring how the money will get split is the problem. Talk to me ladies.

Hey Matlock. After doing a lot of thinking, I decided to order a few Easter Egger day old and skip the whole incubating Ameraucana business. It's not like I'm wanting to show or breed them, just wanted a few bearded girls that lay pretty eggs. The Easter Eggers should serve that purpose just fine and I can order pullets and lessen the risk of ending up with a roo.

I came very close to trying to incubate them myself, but Im trying to stop overcomplicating my life!!

As for your co-op thing, that sounds pretty interesting. I like the idea of incubating some eggs, but really cant run the risk of ending up with rooster. I couldn't raise them as I just don't have the housing for them, but I think it'd be fun to tend to an incubator. We eat as much organic as possible, so would love to contribute. How many chicks would you want each person to hatch at a time?

How does everyone feel about ordering eggs to put in the incubator? Is that a bad idea to order since its mid July? I'm in northwest alabama we have had the heat index at 112 today.

Well the common incubators will hold 4 dozen if you stack them in for the first week. After that your usually tossing some here and there anyway. I'm really not sure how large of an operation the other two want to get to. I just said ya'll sell them and I'll see to it that they are hatched and raised. There is a very good sized farm in Dickson where the chicks will be raised at. There's still so much to look into. I just thought instead of trying to build a big huge incubator, it would be easier to outsource that to some folks who already are experienced at it. Shoot, I don't even know what it would be worth for someone to incubate the eggs. I guess a percentage of what we intend to sell them for. I really don't have much figured out yet. I will post as it comes to me for ideas and such.
