The Middle Tennessee Thread

Congrats to owners of all the new chicks. I've got 18 altogether - I hatched 15, and Donna supplied me with 3 to replace the 1 that died. I think my husband has already adjusted to my chicken math. He didn't blink an eye at my getting 3 chicks to replace 1. LOL! We finished the coop for the 5-week and 8-weeks olds yesterday. We moved them into it - and moved the new chicks into the garage brooder. It's nice to have the baby chicks out of the house.

Anybody else go see "Disney on Ice"? We took the two oldest grandgirls yesterday. It was a lot of fun.

Another red pyle egg today!!! yeah

I scored some free privacy fence yesterday and that will do all the perimeter and plenty left over too.

I took my ad off for the chicks and I now have 7 waiting to go in the incubator

I told hubby that I will HAVE to do test mating over the winter just to see what we get and he said ok

I did the math for him on the pullets that are not laying yet (8mths and older) and he said good thing you are getting started early this time!!!

QUESTION for all you chicken experts: I have Rocks, EE and NH when should I be able find the roos? They will be 4 weeks tuesday and I only see maybe 3-4 obvious roos out of 26. I think I have more pullets in the next batch too. Hum... is it the chickens or the incubator?????

That is were chickens just multiply.... and multiply.... then you can worry about where to put them! or sell them... or eat them.... But then you will need more chickens

I think spouses do the counting and math, we just see chickens!!!!!
lau.gif
THEN it hits us we need more cages, the spouses saw that coming cuz they counted!!!!

We need spouses that can't count.... cuz I really have no idea how many chickens I have... hubby probably does

BTW Chicks don't count in chicken math... they are toooooooo little and don't take up any space

Let's say I want to add 5 more hens to my flock. To get 5 hens I would set 40 eggs.

40 eggs= 20 chicks that hatch
20 chicks that hatch= 10 males and 10 females
10 males and 10 females= 5 keepers and 5 other hens that just aren't quite right for the flock and can be sold to make more money to buy more eggs

Now, just suppose that you get more chicks out of your original hatch than 50%. Those are "bonus" chicks or "free" chicks and they are also acceptable to add to your flock because they don't exist mathematically. This also is true of any extra eggs that the seller might throw into the mix. They also don't exist in reality because you didn't order them.
