Well Tracy IF you had those big ole fluffy chickens they would be able to keep themselves a bit warmer than the non fluffy version.

Seems to me you need an addition to that less than fluffy flock you have over there.

No really I do apply plastic over part of the run to cut back on wind and rain and when it gets really cold I put a heat lamp in the coop just because I can and it helps keep the water above freezing.

I hope everyone is staying dry and warm today this weather STIIIIIINKS! Country feel better soon!

I also install plastic on the outside pens. It allows them access during the day when the wind is howling.

I've already told the hubs, when this place sells we are not buying a house sitting on top of a hill ever again.

You know, I would think that they would be freezing, instead They are out and about. My friend lets hers range out during winter and have no problems with it., ive found silkies hate it though, being they only have thin feathers and all.

Tracyree, my birds do not roam a huge area, so I feel I need to provide better shelter from the weather. I figure the more I limit the choices of my critters, the more responsible I am for their comfort. A flock with a couple of acres to roam can seek out the best places to stay out of the weather - - my birds depend on me to keep them out of the wind, LOL!

Anyhoo, here's what my oldest run looked like last winter.

We screwed an old window to the north side of the run and ran plastic around it. The north side was buttoned up tight, but the east, south and west have varying degrees of ventilation around the top, including the pitched roof ends. This really does a great deal to keep things cozy in winter. . . but I am careful to make sure there is enough ventilation, just not drafty, floor-level wind.

Hope that helps.

Hello to all our Mid-TN folks! I have not been on much lately, but I think of you all often and hope your holiday season is happy and safe.

My hatch has started. Overnight two of my chocolate orpington project chicks hatched. They're peeping and moving all over the bator. I don't see any other pips. Out of 41 eggs, only 28 made it to lockdown - and I was uncertain about a lot of those. If I get 12 chicks out of this, I'll be happy. Just didn't have the good luck I had last time.

Looking at my 9-week old chicks, I think I have three welsummer roos, a blue rock roo - and I'm not sure about the others. Anyone interested in those? If not, I'm going to take them with me to the chicken show Saturday and see if I can find some buyers there. They're beautiful birds - but I don't need roosters right now. I will probably keep one of the welsummers, though.

The two new chicks are LOUD! I have the bator in the back bedroom, and I can hear them peeping three rooms away!
