The Middle Tennessee Thread

I am quite new to this chicken thing... I adopted in April last year, 9=1 week-old chicks from my grandson's preschool... they needed a home So now as my older brother says.. I am a chicken farmer..haha.... I was asking on another post, michigan post, that I think I have a chicken sitting on an egg... she is between the coop and a bale of hay and she will not leave that spot... I had been in Tenn., for a few days.. visiting a few weeks ago... when I came back.. I was cleaning and noticed she was stuck in there.. today she is still there... I will keep watch on her a few more days as I found out it takes around 21 days for a chicken to hatch an egg.. that would be neat... any advice would be appreciated...

The Poultry House is a breeder/hatcher here in my area of middle TN. It is a closed facility, no one can come visit due to bio-security. He only hatches and sells in the spring. He takes online or phone orders and then on certain days he brings the chicks to someplace off site, like a feed store, TSC, etc and people pick up their chicks there. I bought my RIR's and BO's from him last year. I like that the chicks are several days old and already know how to eat/drink and there are no sickly or weak ones, which you sometimes get with day old chicks you order through the mail.

Morning all!

My birds are grumpy grumpy grumpy this morning. My two little roos are fussing, and the older hens are especially grumpy. My oldest Australorp hen had a tantrum this morning . . . she sat on her sheltered perch staring straight at me while the rain came pouring down, "bor-bor-bor-bor-BAAAAWWWWWWK!" (translation: "I'm mad as he**, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!")

Mean-Mommy-Egg-Thief also brings the rain, you know.

Can't we do a Sun Dance or something??

Since it's too nasty outside to take pics, here's a bright sunshiney one from June 2009 - - a prickly pear cactus I rescued from the back of my yard. I chucked it into a bucket of sand, neglected it and it sprang into beautiful bloom. . . . Back in CA you could go to the old local diner and still get nopalitos chopped up into a nice Western omelette. . .

Sending thoughts of sunshine to everyone!

Not trying to be mean but He's a hatchery not a breeder....He's not concerned about the APA Breed Standards. Also sells Ameraucana's and doesn't even own one(oops) I love my hatchery layers so no I'm not against hatchery birds and not hatchery bashing...there is just a difference between those of us that breed to make the breed better (hopefully)and a hatchery.

Hey Jen...if we get together with Anne and do a sun dance the clouds would laugh so hard they would cry even more

Can't you see it big ol rubber boots-mine are even hot pink and wet barn coat out there dancing around. It wouldn't take long before people would be coming with little white jackets..hey they would wash our dishes though and do our laundry while we were on vacation.
My Wynadotte's are agreeing with your Australorp lady..they don't do snow or rain or cold...they are cold hardy wimps so complain and gripe like I can fix it for them. Then the Cornish are out in the ponds like a duck..they are all the same color now..TN Mud color happy as can be.They are so under rated..read they are bad layers and don't play well in mixed flocks

The sun will come out and we will be working on the rain dance by July..it will be us dancing in our bikini with the hose watering down our chicken runs to keep them cool and happy
When I get these cuties out of the bator I'll post some pics

We have Buckeye...got them for our Meat bird cross but fell in love with them instantly. Now they are one we would like people to get to know better. They are very mellow prefer to cuddle so you will step on some toes

They will live where you ask them to and will play with all but could be bullied by one if there is a bully in the area. Now,mine are not hatchery but breeder birds I have heard by many that the hatchery one's are not that cuddly and sweet which is a Buckeye trait. They are really under rated and are just great to live with.
I don't have any for sale...actually getting ready to buy some more from a real good breeder in Ohio..if you want to split an order give me a yell.

Holly - Is there a breed you don't have?

I haven't broached the subject with dear hubby yet but I was thinking that a total of 15 chickens sounded doable so that means 3 buckeyes. Pullets. How are they at laying?
