There are lots of breeds we don't have here
lol.png
..we don't have any of those common breeds that are around here on every corner..or coop...other than just to lay eggs for breakfast. We don't breed them though. Now,we only have Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (Partridge and Blue coming soon) Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana,Blue Rocks,Buff Sussex,Lavender Orpington French Marans in Black and Blue Copper, White Laced Red Cornish and Buckeye for big birds EE and OE for fun...Bantam Cochin in Mille Fleur, Blue and Black Mottled and solid then a few Bantam Ameraucana and Silkies for fun.
One of our projects-as if all of those project colors isn't enough is a healthy self sustaining meat bird that has some meat on it and ready to eat at the 4 month range before they get tough..I'm not pressure cooking a chicken or dumplings(which would not be cooked in my house) to eat one we raise..It must pass the out door BBQ test. That's where some of those very old breeds came about here. The Buckeye was a great meat bird and the Buff Sussex grow quick plus both are very mellow sweet breeds.Buckeye lay very well but all true Heritage breeds lay less than the hatchery versions out there today...gosh it sounds like I'm hatchery bashing all the time today

but they are into chicks which means they need to have birds that lay lots of eggs so they cross other breeds in there to get something that looks kind of like the breed they state and increase the laying but are no longer the true Heritage bird.

Shelly-I had seen that ad but I can't sell there or buy..NPIP rules so didn't check into it.From the ad I would say most are hatchery stock since all the feed stores have or will be getting chicks soon and it's at the co-op then rest will be the local sellers

know my saying well not sure if you have seen it or not.
"It's easier to ask and get forgiveness than permission" Mine no longer even voices a rebuttal. He does hope I keep it to maybe one more chicken house and until It's built keep it where I'm at now which I'm fine with..cutting back on breeds allows me to focus more on the few I'm keeping.
And yes I can keep the chicks until we find the pullets.I'm needing a roo so it will work out fine.
Edited to add we have a few FBCM chicks now for sale.

Okla-I won't have any for sale until late Fall unless some of the kids are roosters.I only kept one tween roo and the chicks because of the dreaded space issues but now I fixed that so I can breed for pure when they get old enough. They are so sweet.Very mellow and rather large. Another like the Buckeye that won me over to wanting them for more than the meat crosses.A much nicer personality on both of those than the RIR ..
I wanted to go to Dalton this weekend

Morning all! It started out cloudy here right before dawn, but it cleared up quickly and now it's nice and clear. There's also this funny yellow light in the eastern sky. Huh.

We have all kinds of yard birds out this morning! Haven't seen many cardinals in the past few weeks, and now Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal are looking for real estate in the bushes near my bay window. They (or their parents) have hatched eggs there a couple of times before. We also have lots of robins this morning! They are everywhere.

Well, my roos are fussing away right now . . . it's almost 8 a.m., and the high school kids are thumping away with their car stereos on their way to school. Guess my boys don't like all that bass. (I don't either, but I figured it was just 'cause I'm old.)

I am not a happy camper about this, but I won't be going to the big double bantam show in Dalton, GA tomorrow. I'm terribly disappointed, but I don't trust my car at the moment. I will still be going to see my niece in her big play, but I'll ride down to Winchester with "Gramma" tomorrow, instead of going to the one tonight. Ah well. It will be nice to see my brother's family, anyway.

Those of you who are going, please let us know what you saw and how fabulous it was.

Now I did see the info about the swap/sale going on down in MBoro. I figured it was co-op/hatchery birds. If you're looking for your basic egg layers, that would be alright I guess. I figure I know enough BYC folks and breeders that I can find what I want (plus some!) through my own contacts. Those of you who have not seen all the different kinds of birds/chicks might find that a good visit, though. It is always good to see live birds when you're learning the breeds.

Holly, I may try to get out your way soon for a visit. You always have lots of cool birds scratching 'round over there!

CityGirl, I want to see some pics of your little fuzzy beebies. I will try to stay calm.

Enjoy the weather, everyone! Be sure to say a little prayer for those affected by the enormous Japan quake today . . .

Wanted to send a quick CONGRATULATIONS out to Shelly_WNC, who was just visiting her brand new grandbaby! If any of you went to our January lunch and met Shelly, you will not believe this gorgeous lady is now a grandma!!
