Morning all! Lovely October morning here in Middle TN. Oh wait, it's April! Anyhoo, it's nice weather for early fall, eh? Looks like we're in for more W-I-N-D tomorrow, so batten the hatches and stake the banties down . . .
Xiu Xiu, my little red silkie hen, hatched out two bantam Ameraucana chicks yesterday - - Day 19. The banties I have hatched do tend to go a day or two early. Looks like we have one blue and one splash; I'll try to snap pictures later today. Mummy was not in a mood for paparazzi when I visited her this morning. (OklaDD, this is that little red silkie hen you brought me two years ago. She's a good little broody!)
For those interested in egg-hatching discussions . . . I am finding that fertility tends to be low for my first year hens, but good with my older hens. Roo's age does not seem to matter much. I had an excellent chance to test that theory with two batches of booted bantam eggs a couple of years ago. I set both batches of eggs at the same time, and marked them. Hatch success rates were strongly related to hen age; I only had around a 10% hatch rate with eggs from first-year hens paired with an older rooster, but a 75% hatch rate with the batch from second-year hens paired with a young cockerel. There's more info and color discussions on my "butterscotch" page - -

Well, I hope everyone who is going to the Middle TN meetup today has a GREAT time! I am bummed that it doesn't fit into my schedule, but if we just keep holding these little get-togethers we'll all get to see each other.
I am saving those echinacea seedlings for those of you who PM'd me, and I will get with you to find another time to meet. I may even chuck them into larger pots so they can do some more growing.
CityGirl, thanks for arranging the meet!
