The Middle Tennessee Thread

HI everyone! Im in Lewisburg TN, about 10 minutes south of Henry Horton Park. Too bad they dont allow chickens! I think I have already introduced myself, but just wanted to chime in again and let yall know I will definitley try to make the next meeting if not too far. We just moved last summer from the Mt. Juliet/Hermitage area. Wanted to ask if there is a meeting in April? I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and am so excited about my chicks! I didnt know I would fall in love with chickens!! Everyone thinks Im crazy!

TNChickie we had a meet up April 2nd at Red Robin in the boro....we stole one of their tables for 3 hours hehehe.....I think we are working on the May 15th now...I can't wait for the next one...it's so nice to talk to others about chickens...some people at work look at me like i am crazy...

I hope all is well after the nasy weather yesterday.....I tried my best to stay dry at work yesterday but....didn't work...oh well....My parents drove here from NY they got here at 3am....the house is so quiet right now...it wont be when 4yr DD chatterbox gets up LOL I hope everyone has a great day and hope we can find a place to meet!

Guys my husband will be home for 35 days starting next Saturday so I can not say for sure I will be able to even show up. I was not thinking about that when I offered my place up. Nor did I think you crazy people would go the extra drive to have a meeting. I can call the Woodbury park and ask if they will allow chickens since Woodury is a farming community anyway they may just allow it. I will gladly do that if you all want. I do hope I am able to attend but I know we are crazy busy when he is home and our apts should be in the final stages of building and hopefully ready to rent. Which will only add to how busy we are but I do need to get them rented pretty quick. Let me know if you all would consider the Woodbury park and I will make the necessary calls.

Going to the city commision meeting on naming the bridge then off to the flea market. I hope someone is doing a sunshine dance today. Yesterday was awful.

Lori I only let a select few of the Showgirls go but you are a good friend and I will see what I can come up with.

I am never leaving home again. I once again came home to hungry, thirsty animals!!! This time one of the half grown babies outside was dead. They had desperately tried to get inside the hanging feeder to the rained on sludge inside. My #!^*@^!% house sitter didn't refill ANY of the smaller feeders and didn't put them inside the coop to get out of the rain. The hanging feeder in the silkie coop had a dead EE baby on the bottom layer and another 5 half dead babies crammed on top of her. I brought three of the worst in the house and have been shoveling mash and scrambled egg and grape bits into them all afternoon. The others seemed a little better so they stayed outside. They did gobble up the food I put out and the scrambled eggs and grapes that they got. The poor babies are all fluffed up and miserable looking. They were also really skinny compared to when I left. When I left a week ago they were healthy and happy and running around like crazy being normal adolescents. Now they are just huddled and pitiful looking.

I do not understand why chicken sitting seems to be beyond my college age house sitters. It's not like this is rocket sceince! I left THREE PAGES single spaced of notes on how to do this. I talked to the girl at length about what to do. She sat for me once before and I came home to no eggs collected and dry water bowls. We chatted about an hour that time about what was expected of her and how she had screwed it up. She seemed to understand what needed to be done. I felt like she got it.

Maybe she is just lazy. I very specifically said to refill the small feeders and told her where the food was. I very specifically told her to top off all the water bowls EVERY MORNING! I very specifically told her to collect all the eggs every day. I even told her the six places that they lay. I come home this morning to dead and dying babies, empty food bowls, starving grown chickens and chicks, empty water bowls and 4 dozen eggs in the coops.

Why is this so freakin' hard?!!!! It's not like I am asking them to scrub out coops or water bowls. All they have to do is feed them, water them and collect the eggs. That should take a grand total of perhaps 10 minutes in the morning.
Babies hatched out while I was gone and she did manage to get them out of the bator and into the brooder. But this morning when I got home the waterer was bone dry. Not only had she not changed it out daily like I told her, she clearly had not changed it out for a while if ever! Why? Why? WHY?!!!

To add insult to injury, the house is messy, the kitchen a wreck and the dogs and cats had empty food bowls as well. They fell on the food like they hadn't eaten in a day or so. The girls had "played house" cooking and messing around and didn't clean up their mess. So now I am home after a long week away and heading into a hard week at work and I have to come in and spend the day trying to keep chickens alive and clean up the mess they left behind! What is wrong with this generation?!!

I'm done with traveling. It's just not worth it. This consistently happens.

OMG Anne how horrible

it is so hard to try and find anyone responsible that cares. One reason we hardly ever get to get away from here.Hopefully they all get fat and sassy again real quick.

OMG Citygirl, I feel for ya! I'm a college student as well but I can't understand, it's not like it takes much time to fill water bottles/bowls up! I get lazy too from all the school days but every morning I top off all the water so I know when I get home no chickens will be dead. I'd never use someones house to cook food in, she obviously is disrespectful of others things. I hope you'll find someone more responsible to watch your house, leaving shouldn't mean worry to death about your animals back home. I hope you didn't pay her much, she doesn't deserve anything but a bill.

Cool I am in the Lewisburg area- out west in the Mooresville coummunity. WELCOME to the BYC and to my area of the woods.

City girl- so sorry to hear. You didn't pay her did you? Did you give her a bill for the sick and dead birds? I have learned that I am never selling another hatching egg. Some people are just stupid and you can't fix stupid. Educate the ignorant yeap but stupid...no way. Wouldn't stop traveling but would look for a close BYCer that could come by maybe.

Awe city girl I am so sorry to hear that ...def next time get a bycer at least we know how detrimental it can be not to get things done. I have to do my chores in the afternoon. I leave the house at 445 am. DH opens my pop doors before he leaves for the day in the AM. Hope the sick ones get better

Oh holy crap CityGirl, I am so sorry to hear about the mess you came home to. I am p!$$ed just reading about it. Please do not pay that irresponsible child - - I second stanglover on that. I also agree you should work with a BYCer to oversee your pet sitting. At least you will know someone who cares about critters is looking after them!

Hmph.

. . . and please let us know if we can do anything to help. Again, I am so, so sorry.
