I like big butts and I cannot lieStunning! Big fluffy butts!
I lost my first chicken today. I am guessing it was a bird of prey. When I walked out to find where all the chickens had gone to, I saw a big grey bird fly off from the area and a murdered chicken nearby. There was a concentrated pile of feathers in one place and the body in one piece was maybe10 feet away picked down to the bone, even the eyes. I am assuming if the neighbor dog had visited there would be a bigger mess, right? Does that seem like a hawk may have done this? I am relatively new to chicken keeping, so am wondering if I have to worry about a hawk coming back for seconds? and thirds? I like free ranging, but this makes me want to lock them up!
RIP my little roo, Mack.
hope those fully butts aren't too sad about 2 of their sisters being gone.
That's what I was afraid of. Thanks!Once a bird of prey tasts blood from an area, it will be back more often than ever. It will become a feed ground for it.
If your area can be penned in, run barb wire in a pattern or criss-cross to prevent hawk diving or owl diving into the pen area. Tin plates and such only work for a short period until the bird of prey gets wiser.
Depending on how bad it gets, there are other methods too.
