Glad you like her!

You might be right about the light. Can you do something to BLOCK it from their view?

About all I could do to block it is turn the coop around. Then they would get little sun. They are about 50/50 with getting in the coop each night and when they do they are starting to use the roosts also. I think They just need a little more time to acclimate.

Here are pictures of Marilyn...

Did you do a 2 day lockdown when you first put them in the coop? Where they are closed in the coop with no access to get out. With food & water of course. It worked with mine. They only slept in the coop. The same chickens when put in a new coop & run (with no way to lock them in the coop only) wanted to sleep in the nest boxes. Is say its worth a try.

I have had to do that several times when I move birds to new pens when they are young. I also found out the hard way if I don't do that, they can't seem to find the food

Now when I move younger birds outside I lock them in the coop for several days so they KNOW that is HOME. They may not ALL get it but it works most of the time.

Well Donna, I dripped some wax on the dented egg. It still looks good when you candle it so hopefully that does it. I Think my official count right now is 42, but I may be wrong.

Let us know how the wax works. I'm curious. I hatched 7 eggs New Year's Eve. The chicks began laying their first eggs this week. I did a little experiment. I LOVE the smooth, shiny round egg of the Production Red. My roo was a Black Australorp. From the hatch I have one pure black Australorp and two half australorp/Prod Red. The pullets all look like Black Austalorps. one of the mixes has a little red on her chest. The mixes lay eggs like the Production Red. I hoped for black birds (less visible to overhead predators) and beautiful Production Red eggs. I am very pleased. I have three eggs in lock down right now. A neighbor gave me some of her eggs, "THey might be fertile." They were. Have a great week. LOVE the weather.

Quote: She was confusing me..... but now I understand what she is...... she is a Blue Cuckoo Marans. I am not sure I have any her age.... let me know what color egg she lays in a few months. I just swapped up my roos and a few pullets in 2 pens. I can't wait to see what I can hatch for ME in about 3 weeks.
