I gave my chickens some flock raiser with some calcium powder in it tonight.I have been researching on flock raiser and it looks like its not really for laying hens. The protein level is 20%.Anyone suggest a good natural chicken feed that is high in calcium and protein? Thanks!

flock raiser is fine you just have to offer calcium. most put it in a separate feeder and they can get as much as they want.

you can mix the egg shells in but would offer it on the side and I would just crush the shells and not use a blender. I would not think it would be good for them if they breathe it in. you can buy calcium pretty cheap....might can find a mix ratio and mix it in the feed if you want.

I really like my tickets super layer feed. 22% protein and made with pork....chickens need the meat not soy.

I won't blend my egg shells next time,I am going to mix the flock raiser with some scratch feed, cayenne pepper, meal worms, and sun flower seeds so they will have a high calcium and high protein feed.I am going to do that for a couple of days then switch back to flock raiser with egg shells on the side.Thank you so much for the help guys!

what in that mix is going to add calcium? I personally would not mess with mixing feed. you might not give them what they need. just give them calcium....easy peasy!

I find that when I add calcium supplement to my layer feed, the eggs shells get porous and/or have extra deposits on them and it affects fertility. I don't mess with layer feed- it is perfectly balanced and reasonably priced!

When I am not growing my own ACV, I use Bragg's. It's normally pretty easy to find (Earthfare, Krogers, Walmart).
It has to be raw ACV with mother... Bragg's is.
I grind, mix and ferment my own chicken feed, and I use ACV about once a month to keep the ferment balanced - works great.
Some people add it to chicken's water... I don't... never have, just don't see the need since I've never had any health issues that it might address.
