Has anyone tried sand in their runs? If so, how'd that work out?? I'm thinking about getting some of this quikrete sand for mine. http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/100318450 Let me know if you guys have tried it please.

We use large pine bark nuggets in our run. I have been very happy with them. They take a long time to break down but the poop dries up on them and gets worked to the bottom as they scratch around. I haven't changed anything in the run in 6 months, just the shavings in the coop. You do have to go in and relevel ot occasionally because they love digging in it for bugs hiding underneath and to get down to the ground for dusting. In the spirit of full disclosure, we let them out to run around the yard just about every day so the run is not occupied 100% of the time.

yes cattle pour on. I personally have never had mites but I would treat them with it if I saw them. usually I give it about 2-3 times a year maybe. I don't make a habit of treating them. if I am moving them I will treat them. new birds get treated.

I use sand in my longtail pens I do mix De in with the sand . My pens stay dry year around I've had No problems . But that's jest my experience .

My spring hatched CL pullet, "Victoria" started laying this week :)

Don't think "Prince" the CL cockerel is covering her yet, he might would have but on his first day of crowing he got rather full of himself,
and first the Bourbon Sisters (Bourbon Red Turkeys) chased him back towards the chickens,
then the 3 older hens took over to teach him a few things,
I've only heard him try to crow twice since then, & the old hens _still won't let him up on the highest perch at night.
He tried again last week and Ruby my Del pushed him right off onto the ground after which he settled for a rung below the 3 old hens,
while the 2 pullets climbed up w/ the hens...

So gonna eat the eggs for a couple weeks before I try any in the bator.

I will say the eggs are really good size, don't look pullet sized at all which makes me very happy!

I'm hoping the hatchmate SFH "Flo" gets w/ the plan and starts laying now too.
Winter eggs would be so nice this year after having none last winter.

Well I can use it on my sheep too so that is a double reason to get some.
