One of my babies was severly injured yesterday :( He was scalped by the rooster, not sure if she will make it or not. The rooster got a hold of her and pecked out all her head feathers and ripped ALL the skin off the top of her entire head! She is separate now even from her sister. I feel so bad for her :( Darn rooster!

I'm sorry! How's she doing??? If you can clean it up and keep away infection, she should probably be ok. When I took my Dorothy to the vet, she told me they heal great if there's no internal injuries and you keep away infection. She told me the best thing to use is watered down iodine and neosporine. Best wishes!

We use large pine bark nuggets in our run. I have been very happy with them. They take a long time to break down but the poop dries up on them and gets worked to the bottom as they scratch around. I haven't changed anything in the run in 6 months, just the shavings in the coop. You do have to go in and relevel ot occasionally because they love digging in it for bugs hiding underneath and to get down to the ground for dusting. In the spirit of full disclosure, we let them out to run around the yard just about every day so the run is not occupied 100% of the time.

Thanks! I'll try that. They get out almost every day and there are 2 runs that are 8 x 10 for 3 standard size and 4 bantam chickens so they have plenty of room in there.

Farmers' Almanac is predicting another really wet winter. Oh, joy.

can't wait......................

Boil water and dissolve sugar in it. Let it cool and place in a spray bottle. Spray her head about 4 times a day. This will help the traumatized cells live instead of dying due to dehydration and lack of sugars that the blood supply would normally bring them.

I planned on building one big barn that we could divide up- out of stone. But my husband is telling me it would just sink like all the other coops. I just don't know how we're going to get through another winter like last year. We are on top of a mountain and we still flood!

is anyone that knows and loves me going to Lebanon and could pick up some game bird feed? I can't justify a trip but their feed looks good enough for me to eat lol

You would have to drive piles then till you hit bedrock. That is the solution for sinking ground but it might not be affordable.

I would NEVER treat with Ivomec or anything else unless I had a problem.
Treating to prevent a problem simply creates problems by creating more parasite resistance - which is a huge problem in TN, especially with Ivomec.
Rotational worming will help prevent developing the resistance issue but natural resistance is best.
