Hello I am new here and want to raise chickens but I have lots of questions. I live in a rural area in Franklin. What breeds do well here? I have a basset hound and I worry that she will go after the chickens. How do you free range with dogs? Where is a good place to get chicks? I want chickens that are like pets and that are good egg layers. Also I wonder what you do if you go on vacation?

I would recommend Bantams they are so cute and fun to be around.
Silkies are the gentlest Nankins are on the Critical List so breeding them would be rewarding. Old English are nice too.
I need to thin down so I will sell my Flock of Nankins if you promos to sell me a Tro for $50, if I ever want back in.

Hello and welcome….I too am in Franklin. Before I got my chickens I did a lot of research to find ones that were heat tolerant, but also cold tolerant and had good attitudes since they would be around kids. I have a Dominique, Orpington, Columbian Wyandotte, Olive Egger, Silver laced Wyandotte, Silkie, Rhode Island Red, Blue Copper Maran, and a Splash Maran (which by the way turned out to be not so friendly but she's not aggressive either)
As for dogs, ours don't even notice them….my daughters Dachund bit through the run trying to get them and scratched the door op the coop, my other daughter has 2 large dogs, one tries to get them one doesn't seem to notice them. ….it just depends on the dog. I'd have yours on a leash when you try to introduce them and see.
As for where to get them, there are several breeders on this blog and you can check them out on the list……I've gotten several from DMRippy and my Silkie from Anne.
If you have any questions, this is the place to ask them, there are lots of experts on here, I've learned ALOT!!!

We recently moved, and the new buyers at our old place want to purchase some of the laying hens we are leaving behind....question is, what should I expect to get for 4 year old barred rock laying hens?

If it is a standard bred bird (which I don't know of too many in tn), they you may have something worth a little money... Maybe $15-25 depending on the line it came from. If it's a hatchery bird then it isn't worth the drive at that age.

They are hatchery birds that I'm leaving behind, I wanted to know what to charge the new owners of the home, they offered to pay fair price for them, there are about 10-12 of them plus a couple roos...
