That's cool .....or hopefully warm!

Interesting, I would worry about keeping temps.  Glass is not a good insulator, might have to run more than it should.

I am worried about that as well. The glass is pretty thick. I can cover some of the louvers(sp?) on the top. It's one of those counter-top food warmers that you see in a gas station. My dad saw it out back and asked them about it----said the thermostat went out. He knew I was looking for something and thought this might work. My original plan was to get a dual zone wine cooler and use the bottom for incubator and top for hatcher. I haven't been able to find one cheap enough :hit. I did find a compact fridge/freezer that I bought FIVE MINUTES before my dad called about this thing. I'm still trying to decide whether to tackle this thing..... I found a wiring diagram on-line--it has two radiant heat elements on the bottom, one in the top, plus four regular 60w light bulbs in the top--definite overkill.

Quote: Hum...... I don't know that it will be stable enough for hatching. You would have to hook up a thermostat. That thing is supposed to keep things REALLY hot. Does it heat from the bottom? If it heats from the top and bottom I would only use the top.

Honestly.... that thing would scare me. Use the fridge for incubating. Make a hatcher they are just an insulated box.

I am heading back to Rural King tomorrow I think (I have to call to make sure) and I thought while I was up there I might get some feed. I think there is an Amish or Mennonite feed store up there.... anybody know where or what the name of it is? Is it worth the trip price wise?

It's been a while since I posted. During all the snow and ice, all 4 of my girls (choc wyandottes from Donna) were laying. I was getting 3-4 eggs per day. However, as soon as the cold weather passed, the top girl went broody. Then the second in the pecking order went broody.

Now I've got 2 broody girls. At least my other two are still laying. I've been free ranging them for a few hours when I get home. The girls scratched out a nice spot in the dirt to give themselves baths. It's funny to see them rolling in the dirt and then sunbasking/purring like a cat almost.

We went to the TSC in Triune the last weekend in Feb and they have chick days started. They had Black Australorps which is what we wanted all along (nothing against our wyandottes) so we got 6 of them. When we got them home, the little runt was so little because it had a bad case of pasty butt. After some warm water and some gentle work, we cleared it up and kept all of the babies clean with some Petroleum Jelly.

We've got them in a big brooder now, they've been growing so quickly! Gotta build a new coop in a weekend or so (I'll be looking at your pallet build again, Donna!)

My black australorps are laying but no fertile spots soon as they so I am going to collect and incubate same with my silver Wyandotte
