So I had a student last night ask me what happened to the older hens that were no longer laying. I said at my house they live out their days here doing what happy chickens do. HE fumbled around a bit talking about happy chickens and sustainable raised and all that before I finally figured it out and said "Are you looking for meat birds?" Yes, he thought he was. I told him that I always had roosters to move and that I would be happy to swing him a deal, but that he would have to do the killing and processing. You could see that he hadn't thought about that part. I don't know if he thought I would do all the processing or what, but I was quick to tell him that the only reason I didn't eat them myself is that I couldn't/wouldn't do the killing part. I told him to go do some research about how that process works and get back with me. We'll see. I think he has no idea what he is proposing. I appreciate that he is concerned that his food come from a sustainable, "happy" source, but I curious to see if he can figure out how to process. I'll keep you posted.

I really wish there was a poultry processor nearby.

Off to rehearsal and then hopefully off to see the family. Enjoy the weather!

CityGirl, I am convinced we need a new Adult Ed program for the State of TN . . . an ag/abattoir/livestock butchering certification, maybe in association with the TN Technology Centers or something. There could be classes on the butchering, state regs, and setting up a small business. . . and the TTCs are very good at getting students through the programs and helping them get placed.

What do you think - - trained old-world-style abattoirs in the states who have their own little butchering centers so all the smallholding folks can get their livestock butchered all year around and know they are meeting state regs! Now to write a program proposal for a program that pays for itself.

Chicken coop is almost there!

According to husband it's done - as in "nothing can get in and nothing can get out" but I think we can do a bit more to it later.

All five girls are in the coop checking it out. My girls are in love with the little cochin and I'm already thinking it needs a friend! So, when's the next meet-up?

well,I can fix her up with a little friend..I have one in mind already

every kid-and adult needs a bantam Cochin...thanks to Jenski who got us hooked the day she brought us Lucy. They are so good with the kids it gives them a great start into chickens without attitude. So glad they are enjoying her
My yard looks so funny most of my free rangers are gone and I'm still trying to figure out where my older chicks are...right now we are using wire cages until the pens are built in the new house and it's musical birds getting them out of the house and figuring out what wire cages have who.I'll be so happy when it's all done and back to organized but having them out of the house is worth every bit of it.
