The Middle Tennessee Thread

I think I'm in. I hope to both show and sell. I need more info before I totally commit though. Working on it.

So do we think we are all game for a local meet up on April 2nd since most folks seem to be heading to GA for the March 12th event? What do we think about April 2nd? Good? Bad? Is there a better date?

I can't commit to anything between March 26 and April 30 just yet my hubby should be home for a few weeks. Not sure what all we will end up doing. But I will try and come if we are around.

Hey there you mid TN people! Got me a mess of questions....hope you don't mind if I jump in here.

Sprained my ankle pretty badly 17 days ago, so I've only gotten out to the coop a few times these last few days. My little party silkie, Gypsy has some serious head feather issues.....she's the smallest of my 5 girls, and I've seen the larger banty pecking at her before. The feathers on top of her head look like they've been chewed partly off, as well as some down the back of her neck. No signs of blood, and her skins not involved. No parasites evident, there or around vent/under wings. Her feathers are also rather dull. No signs of illness.

I don't think hubby followed my feeding instructions (cough-cough) as it looked like more feed/scratch should have been used up. Do you think the others could be chewing on her feathers? Or do they pull them completely out?

A couple of red shouldered hawks have been visiting my yard every day for over a month now. Can't let the girls out of the covered pen. It'll be awhile (couple months) before I could get a tractor built to get them ranging again. What about a roo? My coop is really too small, but maybe I could add another 'room'? Would a roo really help prevent hawk attacks? Should I get a big guy or would a silkie fella help keep them safe?

Any suggestions appreciated, y'all!

Believer- A silkie roo will be no help at all. They just don't have a good enough range of vision to be useful as flock protectors. My standard size roosters have all been great at seeing the hawks before they get to close to snatch someone. I don't know that they would be that much help in a fight, but they do get the girls to cover pretty quickly. The silkie boys are pretty clueless. They are sweet and all, but just aren't the sharpest crayon in the box if you know what I mean!

Could your little girl be molting? That sounds like mine when they lose their topknot feathers in a molt. Can you get a picture? My silkies never molt like the large fowl. It is a very strange process with them. Are you seeing a lot of feathers or fuzz in the coop and run?

Annie, I'll try to take a pic tomorrow. I'm getting around with a walking stick outside. I'm not sure how old Gypsy is - the lady I bought her from was in a "terrible hurry" and left the hens in a crate....when I tried to ask questions on the phone later she couldn't remember much about the ones she got for me

She was laying when I brought her home last fall, but there were no feathers on her legs. A couple grew in in Nov, which made me wonder if she wasn't fairly young (part silkie, part BO). There are feathers laying around the pen/coop, but 3 girls have that color. Thanks!!!
