You might try a rooster for a while. If he doesn't work out there is no reason that you cannot rehome him. Or eat him.

I hear they taste like chicken...

If it were only an issue of ME hearing a roo, I would get the biggest, mightiest, most protective roo in the county to protect my girls when they're outside.

Sam my bantam Ameraucana that I won't sell...can't sell is the smallest big mouth on the Planet.Everyone knows when Sam is on the job but it's a cute crow.Big Ameraucana Roos seem to be the most quiet then Cornish. We used to hear the Roosters when we first got them...all the time. Now,they are background noise no more than a car going by or the neighbors. My chicken houses are almost under my bedroom window so at night if they really start crowing enough to wake us up we know there is a reason why.
Think of it as people talking..all they are doing is talking to each other and you.Every time I come home and open my car door my boys say hi.
I think I know how to solve Jens Roo problems...we can give one to ALL of her neighbors so no one will be left out

Oh Jen, I LOVE Errol Flynn - isn't that from Don Juan? What a romantic film!
Now if I could find a roo like him..........well!

There are lots of good roos! - - though I have not seen any that look like Errol, I think my little boys are handsome fellows. Next to them the girls look like . . . well you know. I've said it before, the hens are just

The boys are naturally protective, and so many are just so good! I could not keep that pen of bantam hens without Remy. He is my round-the-clock coop manager. . . he keeps the peace, listens to the hens gripe, sorts out hen scuffles, and always always watches out for the hens. If he hears a hen squawk, you can believe he will be marching over tout suite! If a predator approaches his pen, he shoos the girls inside and races to bravely meet the scary creature and guard the doorway. (They call out every hawk, too!) Now that I have had my little roos, I can't imagine living without them. If I hear my roos crow at night, I know I'd better get outside quick!

Some of my deepest animal-keeping regrets are of letting go of every large fowl cockerel I have hatched.
