DIfference with us all now and way back then is that we have them for pets, whereas the grandmas kept them for food..I certainly love the little fuzzy butts! never thought things would change so much!

I AGREE! My grandmother & her sister are full blooded Cherokee Indian & while my grandmother does now have small chicken pen (as she calls it) she didn't have one my entire childhood, they roamed & did as they pleased... My Aunt M does have a huge coop nothing fancy & she has them strictly for eggs & chicken she too doesn't think twice & just jerks them up by their feet & off she goes

... UGH turns my tummy but that's the way they have always done... My grandmother laughed at how pampered my kids & dog are let alone knowing how much we are going through for our feather babies

Hello again everyone. Well we let the house go after the inspection so looks like I will be in TN a bit longer. Things have been crazy busy with house hunting and I had already started packing up stuff we don't use everyday. I am very pleased to not be moving to GA at this point though.

I hope everyone faired well with the storms last night. I was worried about a power outage and 3 incubators luckly all is well this am. I hope the same for all of you.

Welcome to the few newcomers since my last posting.

The meet up was fun I always love hanging out with other crazy chicken people. I do hope we do another one soon and maybe have it where we can exchange chicks. I just wanted you all to know I posted a few silkie chicks up as BIN on the auction site if anyone needs some silkies.

Back to cleaning house my hubby is coming home on the 23rd and my house looks like I was robbed.

No fancy cute coops here...only functional and big chicken houses work here for us. Ours all have foundations but built so they can be moved-County can't tax them

Got to remember those chickens that lived on corn didn't lay as well as they do on good food.We have both pets all named here for life and those that are named Drumstick for a reason..Our kids know not to make pets out of dinner only breakfast.
Now I know what those Silkies need..they need more friends

Lots more friends that lay big eggs so next time your in Lebanon come on up..I'm sure I have 1 or 2 I could spare

Oh,in case your not up on chicken math yet that is 1 or 2 dozen
Sun is out finally.I felt so guilty last night only watering the must have's-got home in the middle of the storm lightning everywhere and playing in water just didn't seem to good at the time..they all made it just fine even with me slacking on the job.
Drumstick is getting so big he's not standing well and he's not a Cornish X at all No Cornish or Rock in him but the next batch of these I'm going to feed like those meat birds and see if it helps.

Hey HappyOne....hopefully someone with real knowledge bout this will come along and help out. In the meantime, look up pastie's (I think that's the spelling) which is when chicks get poo stuck like that. I think you need to act quickly on it. Keep us informed - lotsa luck!

If it doesn't come off easily I've placed the bottom of the chick in a bowl of warm water and gently loosen it up. Not pleasant but it works. Just make sure you really dry the chick off and keep her warm. Don't know what causes it but there are quite few threads on it.

Morning all! Every time we have a storm here we lose power, and it's just a devil trying to keep Internet access for days afterward. Ah well, look, I survived!

Welcome to the new folks! Glad to have you with us.

For the chick with pasty bottom - - this can often happen if the chick is too cold, though there are other factors. Happens often enough with purchased chicks, since they don't always stay a good warm temp. There are a couple of other things it can be, but for me I first keep their bums cleaned off really well, check them often, keep them at a proper temp with good chick feed and clean (room temp) water. If that does not work, you can move to treating it. Do be careful never to peel the crusties off their little bottoms, as this can actually cause some serious problems with their intestines (which I won't get into while I'm having my coffee). Warm water and patience will always break the poop crust down and dissolve it. Make sure the chicks are gently dried off and placed back under a heat lamp. . . . hope that helps.


And as for how our grannies got along back in the day . . . my grandmother once told me that when she woke up on winter mornings, the wash basin by her bed would be frozen solid. My great grandmother may have darned socks by kerosene lantern. . . but if I can sit next to my electric lamp, why go back, LOL?? My modern chickens enjoy their insulated coops and internet cafe. Why have a shed if you can have a chalet? (Yes, yes, you know they don't have internet, sillies. I just can't trust them to stay away from the naughty websites.)
