Not to sound negative but Poultry Hollow is well known for selling what he has not what you want.I went up for a second hatchery type buff bantam Cochin so my kids could quit fighting over the one we have..it was an obvious large not bantam and he got less than nice when I kept insisting it was a large..my son didn't care and we brought her home..she's not bantam

I recently heard from a newer chicken owner that went up for a Dozen Delaware..he had them no problem. All are White Rocks not a Delaware among them so beware when you go.His Ameraucana are Easter Eggers like most back yard farmer breeders.
I could go on and on with customer complaints...from not selling what they want-once they figure it out to his answers of questions they ask.He has hatchery quality birds as welll which is fine as long as that's what you want.
Getting new hatch chicks vs older chicks doesn't mean they will be friendlier birds.Much of that is in the breed and breeding. If you have a flighty breed like my leghorn ladies you can play all you want with them as chicks and as tweens and adults won't be your cuddle pets but will hang out with you.Take a Cochin or a Wyandotte and it doesn't matter when you get them they will be your friend. We don't sex our chicks but here all of our chicks are child handled daily so even those sold older are used to riding in Barbie cars and trains
roll.png
just depends on where they come from on the handling they get.Breeders spend more time with their birds than hatcheries do so your more apt to get older handled chicks from them.

HBuehler so sorry for your daughters loss

And as for Poultry Hollow, it may be worth a quick search of this forum to see the various comments on this seller.

believer01, how are the girls doing? Well, I hope. Yah, if I knew at the beginning what I know now, I would have purchased my first gals from a BYCer. No doubt!
hmm.png
Ah well, we live and learn! You will probably learn more by caring for the ladies you have now than you would with a flock that was all boring and perfect.

Tracyree, you may have more luck - - and less chickeny drama - - if you stick with birds that are all one age to start with. Easy is [almost] always better!

matlock, let's see some pics of your new bator!

Troyerchicks, congrats on your first egg!!! How exciting. I still have pics of ours. It's like Christmas every day when you look in the coop and find some nice eggs. . . . except in my banty coop, where it's more like Easter with all the hidden eggs.

And speaking of hidden eggs, I now seem to have a naughty and bored banty hen who has taken to rolling eggs. She started out rolling one across the loft so she could sit on it. By Sunday, she had figured she did not want anyone else's eggs up in the loft, and I came in to find she had rolled two eggs across the loft and down the loft ramp . . . and her own egg sat nicely in the nest she made. (And no, the rolled eggs did not make it down the ramp intact.) Yesterday she spent two hours digging all the chick feed out of the newly-filled feeder and scattering the whole thing across the coop porch. I guess I need to find more for her to do. Or have chicken fajitas for dinner.

Sissy the broody hen came out to the main pen with her 3-week chicks for the first time yesterday evening, and the first thing she did - - Moms, you can guess this - - was take a nice, long bath. In her case it was a dust bath, but as it's been nearly a month since she last had one, she rolled and purred and just generally had a fabulous time. The chicks started peeping nervously when it started getting dark, and I could just hear her saying, "Ah kids, just five more minutes. . . ahhhh . . . " Poor old silly bald hen!

Well, I'd better get out to the garden before it gets too hot. Suddenly it's summer, and I seem to have missed spring. Yesterday by lunch time I thought I was going to pass out in the veggie garden. Dang! It does take awhile to get used to the heat and humidity - - and last week I was still wearing a jacket!

Enjoy the day, everyone!

Good to see ya back, Jenski! Thanks for asking bout my girls....I am so perplexed!

Still gots someone laying a soft egg every couple days. Still gots one with the runs enough to have a dirty butt (and oh does she hate getting it washed!). Still gots 2 others who squirt loose stuff, but keep their feathers clean. And I only have 5. They're getting all the good stuff you all suggested and have been for months. They all seem just fine to look at, except the little girl with the tattered feathers. But it can't be good for them to keep this up for so long.

They surely are enjoying the weather.

And the locusts!!!! Oh my! Every morning they come out of the coop and dash about looking for them. They'll jump, hop, fight to get one. I suppose it'll keep it quieter here for awhile since the locusts don't stand a chance.

Well some good news from the coops this morning..one of my Bantam Am ladies Thing 3 went nutty on me last week. She acted egg bound and in pain but no stuck egg no movement other than to eat a little.. then she laid me 3 soft shell eggs so kicked the egg bound theory in the butt but today she was back up chasing Sam and gave me her tiny blue egg as if nothing had ever been wrong. I'm thinking she just wanted a break from Sam's annoying ways...those Jenski boys are something!! Mr knox is worse..and for those wondering the other hens are Thing 1 and Thing 2
gig.gif

This darn weather..had a frost here last week and suffering bajeebers hot this week it's no wonder they are not all sickly.Mine are all hiding during the day in front of the fans or under the what used to be landscaped bushes...now they are chickenscaped.
I do plan to come to the meet up..I have eggs for Anne and anyone else that needs them.Oh also if anyone "needs" to raise a few yard chickens I have 2 looking to move on...they will be a week old by the meetup both BLRW one in blue one in splash both have a single comb so can't be used in a Wyandotte pen but are still going to be beautiful.
I believe I have some cookies in the freezer if anyone still wants or needs them.
Here is a few pictures of my Mothers Day presents..although I may let Meg use them for now since she's kind of short a roo and give her the Mottled for a year while we raise up another solid blue boy. Not the best pictures but I can't upload air right now.

I recently went there & bought 4 silkies, then became a bit absent on the BYC forum due to some family issues, but I'm back & please DO NOT waste your time or your gas... It is complete chaos, they are less then polite, & 1 of the birds I have is NOT a silkie~ I have no idea what to do with it because it would cost me 10 times in gas & he is a difficult bird to say the least oh & he's a rooster... This lady swore this bird was a silkie, he is not & I am so new to the chicken thing that I'm at a loss on what to do~ On the flip side let me say that the 3 silkies I did get from there are amazing, they are beautiful & I just love them~

On the other topic... I got 4 silkies & a week and a half later went & bought the 4 birds I bought from PH, I kept them separated until last week & they've done beautifully together but I waited until they were all fairly equal in size... I still have the light on them at night but these past two days with the weather I have kept them in a run & they are loving it... My husband built me a run I could move around until we build the permanent coop & they are doing awesome... Sorry I'm not great help but wanted to tell you what I know!

Hi Everyone!!!
frow.gif

Oh how I've missed the advice, help, & just pleasant reading time on BYC
caf.gif
~ I'm back though and not without dilemma! Of course with 5 kids, 1 dog, 2 hermit crabs, 1 cat, & 8 birds oh & not to mention my husband there will always be dilemma... But I'm hoping someone can help me!

I have a bird that I purchased along with my other 3 silkies who I was told was a silkie very neat color & I was surprised & well I should have followed my gut because he is not
barnie.gif
& he is a rough one to deal with... We noticed he is a rooster last week but man he is not at all like the silkies, he's fast, not pleasant, & I don't know what to do with him... No one around me has chickens & I don't know anyone with chickens so I'm at a loss... I refuse to drive all the way back to Poultry Hollow for several reasons the first one being my husband is gone & I'm not going out there alone, second they are not the nicest people God graced Tennessee with, & gas is outrageous.... If anyone can help me I would be so appreciative!

Thank you all so much for the heads up on Poultry Hollow! I had a feeling that they were just "yesing" my questions as the email responses were so curt and alway "yes".

So the breeds we were hoping for are Buff Orpingtons, Ameraucana (any colors besides solid black or solid white), and Barred Rock. CityGirl has some barred rocks that are about 7 weeks old (I think). I'd love love love to take them home if I can figure out how to get the other breeds in similar ages. We are planning on about 7 or 8 in total.

Anyone have any Orpingtons or Ameraucanas they'd like to part with? They will be spoiled rotten!!

NottheSilkie1.jpg

Here is a photo of him not too long after we first got him~ I will take another one today to see if it may help with what breed he is~
