gorgeous afternoon I got just about all the mowing done before DH gets home.

I think he can do the weed eating ( i hate that job ). Ugh hope everyone has a great night!

I just came in to put on a shirt with sleeves and some socks! What is with this weather? We've jumped all over the place. I actually prefer the cooler nights as I think that gives our animals a chance to take a break.

Raven, I'm still new to this stuff, so I'm trying to remember how big Peek-a-boo was at 1 month.....fraid that might be a tad small for what I need. May be that I have to wait a few weeks.

I bought a push mower tonight! An old fashioned 'reel' mower! My hubby is like the dean of the school of incompetence, and doesn't seem to be able to keep power equipment in working condition (I think its his excuse to not do chores, actually
he.gif
) So when I hopped on the riding mower tonight (that he just spent an hour fixing, supposedly) and it wouldn't mow I decided to get my own! When my mother died 2 yrs ago she left me a little insurance money and I've been getting things like this to make my life easier.

Mother liked Ron but realized that "he wasn't perfect" so I'll just bet she's up there laughing about my latest purchase. I may regret this in the height of summer, but 'supposedly' it doesn't require much at all in the way of maintanace. I need a clear path to the coop, the compost bin and around my garden. The rest can grow up for all I care (but it'll drive Ron nuts cuz he cares what the neighbors think!).

Ok, I'll shut up now.

Hope everyone has a great weekend, and an opportunity to thank a vet and to remember those who gave their lives in the service of our country!
Blessings to all.....Pam

Ok, so today is day 6 but I'm going to be out late tomorrow night (band gig) and out of town Sunday night so I candled. My Buff Orp hen kicked out two eggs early on, one EE and one BBS Maran but of the 13 (5 BBS Marans, 5 EEs, 2 Ameraucanas, 1 Cochin) that are left all are developing and you can see definite veins. Who knows how many will make it the full 20/21 days but its a very good sign early on. My photographer (dw) isn't feeling the greatest so I don't have any pics. Maybe Monday night I'll be able to take some.

Just wanted to let you guys know how it's going so far. Here's a pic I took with my phone when she first moved into her new nest. I partitioned off part of the coop just for her with food, water and enough room to move about.

Econman- she's beautiful! Very pretty girl! I just received my buff orp chicks today

So my struggling chick perked up as the day went on with no help from me. I'll see what tomorrow brings. They are sacked out right now, I had no idea they'd sleep with their little heads down. (guess I thought they'd sleep more like grown chickens?). Very cute. (hoping it's very cute and not that their actually all half dead!!

)

Exciting news for me- the handy man started on my coop renovation today!! He took off all the chicken wire in order to replace it with hardware cloth. He also finished the inside out with tounge and groove, it looks amazing! Bit fancier than I envisioned the coop, I'm feeling quite lucky!!

Less exciting news- my 6 year old broke his arm Wednesday. The last week of school, the summer we get a pool. The poor kid has the worst luck!!

I'm also proud to report all 5 of my test eggs ( donated EE eggs ), are developing just fine and all show veining. I thought I saw some actual movement of the "spot" but it's hard to say. I'm still happy.

Tracy,
Happy to hear your puny chick found some resilience. I love watching the babies sleep with their little faces all down. So sorry to hear about your son. I have 7 and 8 year old boys, I know how they operate. Get him a nice float, he'll be fine in the pool.

Congrats on the veining matlock! Any of the grocery stor eggs developing? (I may have missed a post...).

will get Ds a waterproof cast cover next week, he just has to miss out on our first pool party tomorrow. A giant float is a great idea! Just may have to strap him to it!!

EconMan, she's such a perty momma! And how nicely you've done her set-up! Luck lil' lady. What kind of band do you have?

Tracyree, glad to hear #4 is doing better! Congrats on the coop upgrade - hope yer ladies appreciate the tongue and groove! So sorry for your son

Been there, done that (trying to keep a young man still enough to heal). Have had a bunch of broken bones myself (Not bragging, it hurts) and did everything the doc told me to the first time....took over 8 weeks of a good deal of pain even with Celebrex. Next year I broke the other foot even worse, used plantain poultices and QBC Plex for pain/swelling, took a liquid calcium/magnesium/mineral to regrow the bone. Walked without crutches on level ground in 3 weeks, hiking in the Smokies at week 6!

Matlock, that is so exciting. Is this your first time hatching? I never thought about the 'spot' moving....is that where the chick will develop?

Have a great weekend everyone.....don't forget the reason for this holiday.........

All gave some.......Some gave All !!!

Tracyree-my son feels his pain.A few years ago he was sitting on the couch and fell off.I gave him a hug and he took a nap.No big deal the floor is carpet and he was sitting still and just leaned over-right no big deal

Baby Blue Copper Marans are hatching..no word from my Mille Cochin's yet if they plan to come out or not.
We lost my Splash Blue Copper juvie Roo yesterday to "something" found out it wasn't the first visit..in that pen is my old Buff Rock hen and she moved her wing while I was in there last night..she's got a gash that should have killed her or be all infected but it's scabbed over so I'm not going to mess with it now.No hawks are flying around so got to keep my eyes peeled for something out during the day that my dog isn't chasing away

Hoping everyone has a great Memorial Day Weekend..The Big 20 is being postponed until at least Monday so he can enjoy his cake

believer-
Yes, this is my first time hatching. I'm so proud about it. I came to BYC a month ago because my brooding flock had developed an illness. After losing two of them, I turned to the internet and found BYC through a search. I searched the forums and didn't find anything that pinpointed what I had goin on, so I joined and posted. Within an hour I had received advice that helped me get them cured.
Now here we are 5 weeks later, I've built an incubator and had had eggs incubating for a week! I'm hoping to have at least moderate success with hatching so I can keep my own numbers up. We have lots of predators here in the beautiful hills of White Bluff. But I needed my flock to free range to eat the ticks. Back in March my wife got bit by a deer tick and ended up with tick fever... It was the sickest I've ever seen her in 11 yrs. It took her almost six weeks to fully recover, and she lost a month's work. Our final part of the hospital bills (with ins.) tallied over 4k bucks.
I have a trio of speckled sussex and a pair of anconas that I will be separating to keep those breeds pure. These will be my incubating eggs. The 5 EE eggs I'm doing right now were donated to me off freecycle by a nice lady in Cumberland Furnace. I hope they all make it, her hens were pretty girls, but the roo looked like a dominecker. All my neighbors also have chickens now to control ticks, so I'll probably be helping to keep them supplied too.

Oh yea, as far as the walmart eggs go, I kept them for 6 days, then tossed them because the 5 were textbook candling images. There was just no denying that they weren't going to do anything.
