Well I woke to a tragic scene Saturday morning
hit.gif
My grow out pen that housed my keepers for this year was torn apart and all but 5 of the birds were dead I don't know if some predator started the massacre and my dogs finished or if it was my dogs only. I guess it doesn't matter much but my dogs have been around these birds all season with no problem. I just had to sit and cry. I finally had gotten some White Marans to hatch and had a very nice quad growing out

The rest were from my birds but I still have lost the whole season. This sucks bad.

No the peas are safe, just this years crop of chicks I was keeping to grow out and replacements for my breeding pens. At least all but the White Marans were out of my own birds so I canhatch more but

No such thing as "just chickens" If you need some chicks I can part back with the one's I got from you..I have a bunch of Marans babies growing up now There is one hunk of a black roo and a few blue pullets

A happy note...Toast's new chick followed him out to the run this morning.Jen knows me well...I talk to the Cochin's like they are people and the darn little things answer back.
NO,no more jobs or projects for me to take on.I'm having to cut back with the chickens as it is just to keep some sanity..we all know there is a fine line there

Awww, Becky. That's just heartbreaking. I am so sorry.

Holly- Isn't it funny about those silly silkie roosters? My main rooster has been roosting on a milk crate just outside the coop door. He always has a couple of half grown chicks up under him at night. Silly boy! I had a little buff chick pop out yesterday (four of the 6 hens are broody and have stolen a pile of eggs. I've just let them have at it. It's easier than fighting them about it.). Whoever hatched it out is still sitting, but these chicks are go-getters. She is out in the run doing chick things and going to whoever is near when she gets tired. I sat out there for a while last night and realized that the rooster is acting like her "mama". He is showing her food and calling to her when she gets too far away. She even snuggled up under him a couple of times. Those silkie boys are sweeties!

Jenski- There are all sorts of safety rules about those truss roof structures. The mere hint of lightning should have gotten the spot operators out of the truss. The storm warning should have shut the whole thing down and cleared the audience. If the promoters and production managers had gotten to the point of holding the talent off stage in a bunker, then the technicians and crowd should have been cleared as well. There will be massive lawsuits over this one for negligence. You can also see either a massive failure of the guy wires or a total failure to have then installed. If the guy wires had been attached properly the structure might have collapsed straight down, but it wouldn't have crashed forward like that. Lots and lots of problems with this one.

Becky- that is heartbreaking!! I'm so sorry to hear about your chicks.

My silly chickens really confuse me. They spend most of their time indoors, even on a beautiful day like today!!! What's up with that?? I wonder if brooding them indoors has then conditioned to prefer it inside? I thought when their run was finished they'd hang out outside more, but no. (before they had and outdoor run with a wood floor, but we just added a real dirt floor run)
