I would have thought they would be born with eyes shut like rabbits and most of the others instead those huge eyes are all bright and ready to go and born with hair..you sure they were born today

but NO I don't want any before you ask
Emmalyn-I have 3 mottled chicks and ready to eat some unsuspecting Silkie rooster that apparently does a little less hiding sometime and a little more recreational fun than we have ever suspected..he won't even crow for pete sake and 5 chicks

There is one or two eggs left I stuck in the bator since she has her wings full now.The silkies are getting booted out of the pen since they can't behave and in a few weeks I'm going to set more now I have sold all but the very best hens.1 of the cochin chicks had a smashed egg not a bit of shell left so I was going to toss it..shrink wrapped and hard as a rock when I saw a tiny movement from it's beak..poor baby..those darn hens can be so rough on the kids.Took it in the house gave it a warm soak and out popped a cutie that doesn't seem any worse for such horrible treatment..tomorrow it will go back with momma hen.

Stopped by my neighbors to pick up some NH eggs to try and hatch and she informed me the girls have been hanging out with her red shouldered yokahoma (sp?) might be interesting to see what is in those eggs....

She had all kinds of babies hanging with their moms...

millie fluer d'ulcce (sp? these are not my areas sorry) red shouldered yokahomas and one lonely little NH. TOO CUTE!!! Twenty something fussy butts running around...can't wait to get my own little guys!

Setting my first eggs tomorrow any advice???? I do have a question... I have heard you can use Oxine to dip the eggs in to keep the bacteria off the eggs, is that a good idea? The eggs I got today are dirty, not bad but could use a little cleaning. I know not to rub them or anything that could damage the bloom.

Wish me luck! So eggcited....

Holly,
Can I get the mottled chicks from you? I have to pick up a peacock from Raven so I would like to make a 2 for 1 trip.

Well, it's official. I'm a Mighty Hunter.

Around midnight last night I heard a commotion from the coops. I went tearing out with a couple of flashlights and starting poking about. Imagine my surprise when I ran across a possum in the large fowl coop! Ugg. I hate possums. There was a medium sized possum hunkered in the corner of their coop just hissing. The buff orp was squawking up a storm and the rooster was making unhappy noises at it. I wonked it on the head with the shovel a couple of times until it ran out of that coop into the laying house. Repeated head wonks later it was still entrenched in the laying coop, so I ran back into the house to get the shotgun. Daddy gave me a little 16 gauge years ago, but I have never shot the thing before. Well, I shot it last night. It was shockingly loud, but thankfully didn't kick all that hard (or I would have been on my butt in the run!). It also dispatched the (*^(!!! possum pronto. I thought for sure the neighbors would call the sheriff, but apparently they are immune to gunshots at midnight.

So now I know I can shoot the gun in a pinch and there is one less possum on the planet. And my chickens are all safe. I feel the need to go buy something camo now...

Don't forget to clean the gun for the next time

I hope I can do that if I need to. I know how to shot, just never to kill anything.

I knew something had been left out of my gun training. How do I clean the gun? Perhaps I should call Dad. It is his gun after all. Hmmm...

This is the first time I have shot to kill. It only worked because I hate possums so much and the little (*&*!^%!! was trying to get my chickens. If it hadn't been in the coop messing with my girls I probably wouldn't have thought to shoot it. Ugg.
