Hi all. Explain to me about pullets coming into lay in the fall? Is it possible they won't lay until spring? My girls are 22 weeks now and no eggs. Still pretty pale in the combs as well. They are fat and happy, just no eggs. They are barred rocks and buff orpingtons.

Is it possible they won't lay this time of year?

It is possible. They may not lay as quickly as normal because they need to have like 14 hrs of light to lay and days are getting shorter... so maybe, maybe not mine just started laying and some are 8 mths

Countrypunk-get the APA standard on them and learn it inside out. There are many people showing the bantam Cochin's that don't have sq birds. There are a lot of things to look for from comb to feet, vulture hocks are huge with cochin's,overall type which many are lacking then down to the small stuff like eye color.
This is my mottled roo..he's molting in this picture so imagine him with all his feathers..he has done very well showing.

Hubby made me count chickens today

.... with the eight eggs in the bator the total is up to 103..... then he said "I told you you needed 100 layers!!!" that is what I heard. I said they are not all layers! Some will be breeders! Some are roos too.... Layers to me are eating eggs not hatching eggs.... I don't want 100 layers!!!!! 35 layers might be good but 50 max! then there can be 4-5 pullets/hens in each breeding pen so that is about another 50

Asking me to count chickens would be a bad request from my hubbub. I would be more inclined to tell him how much I weighed or what my credit card balance was!

Incubator eggs don't count after all the saying is "Don't count your chickens until they hatch"

I can count mine now...I think if someone could hold them still long enough in my back pullet pen..those things are always on the go and they look alike

So to be safe I can say I'm down to around 125
The car is packed..with a few extra carriers just in case

now out to fill feeders and put them inside the coops so they won't get wet...have to make it easy for my guys while I'm gone..top off the food and water nothing else..other than play with the baby bunnies

First let me say my husband is not up for grabs.... today he said, "I don't mind if you have 2-300 Chickens, as long as we have a place to put them." Then he said, "I don't want you to wait till spring to start hatching." I did explain that I was going to wait till January because I didn't want to have to worry about keeping them in the shop for several months. He really can't wait to see what I get from my breeding plans.

My husband knows what I weight so that is not a biggie to me, I don't have a credit card so no worries there and apparently I don't have to worry about how many chickens I have

Kandi don't for get this saturday is the big Amish sale at Fairview,Ky (near Elkton) Country and I will be getting there bright and early. Last falls sale was almost as big as the spring sale.

Had eight bunnies born last night. First time doe so I was pleased. They are just cross breeds but will be fun to raise and then maybe to eat.
