I am glad I always look first and THEN put my hand in......

Looks like what some refer to as a "Water Moccasin" in some parts of the country. Sorry, but that's enough copper there for me to whack it's head off and ask questions later, and especially since it was eating my eggs!! Copperheads don't usually get that long, only around 2 1/2 - 3 feet. Unless it's a Black snake here, I whack 'em! I've not had but one snake here since I got the cats and chooks. The one Copperhead that did show up in the yard, got eaten like spaghetti by two BCM hens! 1/4 of a mile is nothing, it will probably be back for more eggs...or chicks.

I had a run in with a copperhead over a year ago so I educated myself some. Cottonmouths are related to Copperheads... did you know that? It was a LONG way from water so I don't think it was a cottonmouth and I think they are usually black. the chicks are all in the shop.... He will move further if he come back. First snake in the coops in over a year of having them. Hopefully he will not come back

LOL...it's a rat snake. It will behave like a chicken snake though, so if it comes back (cause a 1/4 mile ain't far for a snake), ya'll should just go on and kill it.
Took a minute to figure out what was going on.... I thought there was a chicken in one box, cuz it was dark and then I looked in the middle box and saw something thin and black. No eggs, odd.... that is there normal box, they don't use that one over there much... let me look..... OH that is a snake eating my egg.... let me go get Doug.....

We are in a wooded area like you know and it took off for the hills across the street.

Hubby and I were just talking about how we didn't have many mice..... maybe we have TOO many snakes. I figured it was a good snake... Don't they eat the BAD ones?

Commonly referred to as a rat snake, actually its a corn snake. I used to raise them. You probably wo.t see it did a while, its not posionous but will obviouslly eat eggs, and mice and rats. I would consider it s good snake unless like you I found it eating my eggs.

If he comes back you want it?

My buddy down the road just went on vacation, his wife has chickens. I wad asked to take care of her birds while their gone, so my flock has temporarily increased by 4 birds. LOL She got me interested in keeping chickens & even without hers included I have twice as many birds as her. I feel sorry for her. She needs some more. Maybe I'll leave het eggs under her birds while she's gone. ROTFLMAO
