There is a place in Fairview I think that sells new 55 gal barrels with lids. I didn't think the price was too high maybe $35. You need to make sure it is new or was used for food grade stuff. I have gotten some of the blue plastic ones with the bung holes, but you have to cut the tops off.

NOW if you are talking about the RAIN BARRELS with a spout at the bottom... you are right. There are instructions online to make them but it is hard to find the parts at the hardware store. You can order them online in a kit. But you have to find a barrel.

We have one more blue barrel, we need to cut the top off and put it out back for the breeding pens. We are using a 30-35 gall barrel and we need more water back there.

BTW I put some Marans Layers on CL. They are either pullets or hens 18mths.

We want to make a system much like you have. I think hubby is tired of me talking about it....lol

I wish I could get more...but not until we can revamp our coop..hopefully this winter we can get it fixed up the way we want it

My 55 gallon water is on its side. that barrel was $15 I think. You can get plumbing for the bung holes at the hardware store. It is just the rain kit you can't find.

We left the top hole open as a vent. I can't remember everything we got to make the smaller bung hole to work, we did get a cut off so we could work on the pipes if needed. The 55 gal never froze, I don't even remember ice in it. It is out of the wind though. The pipes WILL FREEZE and so will the nipples. We have heat tape on these pipes. The breeding pens don't have electricity so we will REMOVE the waterers on the nights when we will get hard freezes.

SORRY that was no help, you want a RAIN barrel. I did see where someone used these barrels on YouTUBE and cut holes in the TOP whit the barrel on its side. The gutter water was filtered with a screen over the hole in the barrel.

We bought our rain barrel last January, I think, at Gardens of Babylon at the downtown Nashville Farmers Market. It was half off at about $50, which was the best price I've seen for a complete one. I'm not sure we could have bought one of the barrels and hardware for much less than that. I'll probably buy another one for the coop this year if we find that sale again.

I found them
