The Middle Tennessee Thread

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Fancy Feather Show will be November 17th in Cookeville, TN at the Putnum County Fairgrounds.

If you are interesting in showing the deadline to enter your birds is November 10th. You can email David Rose for more information
[email protected]

This will be a great place to find some great birds, sell, or have fun showing. These hows are alway alot of fun. I hope to see every one there.
Just a reminder that Saturday is the last day to enter

Don't they all?
ESPECIALLY the Pheonix. My Phoenix bantam roo that I had last year flaunted himself all over the pens. he would strut around in front of every hen he saw... Or roo...

I have been "lurking" in this thread for a while and am finally getting around to posting. This is my first time keeping chickens in TN. I moved from AZ this summer, so the environment is quite a bit different from the desert I am use to. I have a flock of 10 chickens that are around 12 weeks old. 2 may be turning out to be roosters, which I am hoping that at least one of them does indeed turn out to be a roo. I am relatively new to chicken keeping, and I think the honking that both of my potential gentlemen are doing may be practice crows. My hens back in AZ never made noises quite like that.

I am wondering if I could get some advice about keeping chickens during the winter here in Middle TN? Do you have any tips or things I should or should not do? My coop looks like it was constructed from plywood with a metal roof and the run is underneath. Do I need to do any winterizing to it? Being from AZ I can handle hot, but cold...I am clueless. I think my chickens might survive the winter better than I do!

Thanks!

and to The Middle Tennessee Thread!!!
And yeah, Your birds might do better in the cold then you would, LOL. But to keep them happy and hopefully during the colder months I suggest these, And others might give some suggestions too.

1.Winterize, I cover my run and anywhere there is wire to keep the wind from the coop( Keeps the coop so much warmer ) but make sure there is good ventilation.

2.Feed- If you are like me, You let your feathery friends out to play and eat grass and bugs, But soon, there wont be much.. so to keep them happy and get more of a variaty and such, I always supplement my feed, you could buy a Flock block, or add scratch and other things to your feed, to keep them busy..

3.Watch for Predetors....Preds are crazy around this time, Just last night I chased a Coyote across the property with a hammer..Luckly enough I spotted him before he got to the coops...
So, Make sure there is no way anything can get in, and if you are ever doubting, be more safe then sorry... That means cover all the holes, locks on doors, etc. I also use lights to keep them away.

4. Lighting- Optional, I am trying to find a cordless way to light the coop for the winter, but you could use it for Heating, and also let the birds have the full 16 hours of daylight, or is it 14? Anyway..
It would improve the laying during the cold months..

5.snow- Do not be worried about snow, the chickens would care less LOL. We do not get much snow, well atleast where I live.. so my chickens have not dealt with it yet..

thats all my lil tips I guess. Lol If I think of anymore, I will post it.

Good luck and agian...WELCOME!!

Alex.

Alex has some great ideas....this will be my first winter and I've been doing a lot of research.....I decided to do the layer method, it seems easiest, most practical, and a 'NATURAL' way to keep them warm.......go onto Facebook and check out Fresh Eggs Daily.....she has step by step layer instructions. I found this is a method used by a lot of backyard people....I think you'll like it....Cindy

Thanks everyone for the help in finding barrels. We are going to try to get a few soon, so that we can start rigging up a system.

It was the lack of water. We got 4 eggs today and I am so excited,... just in time for holiday baking!!!
