The "Mini-Bator" for $20.. waste of $$ or works??? SW Pa...

I recommend you get a hovobator or LG for $40-50 before you spend over $100 because you want an incubator for just a small amount of eggs. You can put as few eggs in those as you want. If you decide to make an incubator, I would suggest spending the $20 for a wafer thermostat and switch instead of trying the hot water heater thermostat. The range of temps for the hot water thermostat is so large it is hard to regulate. My hatcher has a wafer thermostat and the light turns on at 99.5 and turns off at 101. It has worked wonderfully. If you have used material for the homemade bator you can make it pretty cheap. I used glass from an old picture frame as the viewing window, and styrofoam coolers are pretty cheap. Get a light, wire it all together and there you go.

Or even buy one at Tractor Supply if you have one near you?

It would probably be good to call first just to make sure they have one in stock

(edited to take out non-working map links and to say adding a pc fan to it is really easy and cheap too

Ok, I think I will "pass" on the mini-bator..

Wow, those home-made ones are IMPRESSIVE, right down to the pink duct tape

!!! I am probably "handy" enough to rig one up and get it to work, but it would NEVER look that sweet!

I just called Tractor Supply near me, and they DO have one of the LG still Airs in stock... will hold it for me if I want to get it later today....

Sooooooooooo... in the name of LAZINESS (don't feel like gathering up & buying parts, then constructing), I think I will just go with that. And even if it is a little more expensive than making my own, is probably worth it (to me) in convenience and functionality.

Thanks so much, all!!!! I used the phone # & link from Mirecipes, just read them the product number & they looked it up in 2 seconds, thanx for that!

And good idea selling it afterwards to get a bit of my money back, altho it seems like everyone here ends up doing more hatching, and having more chickens than they intended to... So who knows? May end up keeping it, "just in case"...

suellyn, if you have a choice between a wafer thermostat and a digital, take the digital..

Hey everybody else. you have just witnessed the birth of a hatchaholic..

Yeah right,gonna sell the bator..LOL

Hehehe, glad I could help

I rarely leave here..(especially after gas got so expensive)
So I often give my roomate SKU numbers and check to make sure something is in stock before I let him pick it up on the way home from work

maybe you have friends or neighbors who are thinking about getting chickens. If you hatch some for them maybe you can make back a couple of dollars. I know Im one of those people who prefer chicks instead of eggs. Id also keep the incubator just in case.

Yeah, I just called a friend/co-worker of mine, she already has some chickens, told her am getting incubator & can hatch out some babies for her... She said "no, no NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!..." but I don't think she means it, although my ear is still bleeding...

We shall see, had lots of "chicken converts" at my chic-a-holic's 4 yr old "chicken theme" b-day party (this past sunday... complete with some visiting chickens from a local BYCer!). I bet I will find a use for the 'bator...
