This is considered leakage. Notice the shoulder is black and only the hackle and saddle are red/leaking. I had a couple silver cockerels that were similar. This is a project that we are trying to get solid blacks by continuously breeding the blackest to the blackest.View attachment 3434866

I would think that there is a genetic reason for not being all black. Some gene not present or not studied enough to be known like the one that keeps silver from yellowing in the sun. I would love for a color like that to breed true. As we dont see it in most breeds as a color I am assuming it doesn't or that no one has wanted to try(I dont believe this).

Take my questions and speculations with a grain of salt I'm still learning and reading on genetics. I don't know that we will ever know enough about it in my life time. I love the talk tho.

That's right st Patrick day. I don't know how I forgot I even wore my teenage mutant ninja turtle lanyard to work today just for the green. But due to the positive remarks I got ill probably make it permanent

At least, that's how I and others described him since 'stunning'and 'beautiful' aren't super accurate when talking to me about my birds

I had a couple BC pullets that were black and blue with gold hackles that were beautiful. I know for purity you don’t want it, but leakage can be a pretty accent for a hen that you want to keep for laying. I sold them and dude let them get killed by a predator.

I personally love it. It's just so pretty to me. But I don't raise for shows
