What do you mean "these things happen"
I was expecting solid black cockerels, but an unknown (to me) gene let the red through. In the 20+ years of breeding Cubalaya I have gotten colors that long time genetic pros told me were impossible.
This cockerel is part of a line that I had added to mine 4 years previous and I am still learning how it interacts with my genetics. Based on the breeder I got that line from, him and a buddy of his had gotten nothing but solid blacks for 30+ years. Hence "these things happen". Cause he "should have" come out solid black.
It seems like there are some genes that have been suppressed so much by selection that they eventually stayed hidden. It wasn't until two old lines were bred together and then the F1's were bred back to their parents that a whole slew of defects showed up. Feather color defects that would have disqualified the show birds.
