This girl is almost 8 months old. I tried to break her, really I did. She was booted out of the nest box, put on the roost, never given any eggs. She outdid me and when I had some incubator chicks hatch I have 3 I want to grow out. I gave them to her, now she will never be able to be broken in the future as she'll think she can sit on air and hatch chicks. Oh well, she's already proven in the last 4 days she's a wonderful momma like all my other Marans.I'm so glad you responded to this thread.. I have a BCM hen that's turning two this year, and have found her consistently in the nesting box. She stopped laying but is sitting eggs the that other hens are laying. I thought it was unusual since the breed description mentioned they were good mamas but not that broody.
My game hen is about halfway through incubating 4 marans eggs for me, when she committed to setting I risked life and limb to steal the 10 eggs of her own. I have a Cochin girl who for a week now is trying to hatch sawdust. I have almost got her broke up. There are 4 other girls, 1 Marans who is 8 months old, and Marans crosses who are gearing up to sit. Every where I turn there is a angry hen making the ticking time bomb cluck. The new silkie hen, who was apparently notorious for going broody, she's living the care free life with no indication she wants chicks anytime in the future.
