The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have straw bales out around the outside of the kennel run for the purpose of being wind breaks. I HATE MOLD and I really don't like straw. Held off putting them out there for a long time...finally did it.

I wonder how long before they mold....I'd like to take them and burn them before that happens.

I took two bales of straw, wrapped them in black plastic and set them quite a few feet apart. Then added a "top" via a piece of plywood to create a small "hidey-hole" windbreak for the girls. It's against a southern-facing cinder block wall which snags the sun and holds heat. My plan is to unwrap them in the spring and use it as mulch or add it to the compost pile and let it cook down.

This is a very active thread. I have caught up, and trying to stay caught up. There is far too many nuggets that are laying in wait, that I miss due to skipping around, with a self promise to catch up the reading..... but have not yet found the time!

Glad to hear your feeling better Aoxa, and missed out on the onions!

Unfortunately the onion thing is an urban legend. Read Snopes Here

I am soo gullible !! Sorry, I am sure glad I now know.... I won't waste any onions either! It sure sounded so ... I don't know, possible I guess. Anyway.... apologies!

There is NO need to apologize! Trying to help other people is what this thread is about, and that is what you were doing.

when I have a cold I eat the following. A clove of garlic at night.
As many Blueberries as I can and fresh ginger when I have it around. Fresh local honey.
I am going to start adding apple cider vinegar to the routine as well.
I will also drink plenty of Hot Green Tea when at work. I like to get brands that are not ground so fine.

I have a bit of an odd question for everyone that knows about natural fixes. I have retainers i wear at night only, and as you can imagine they get pretty gross. One is the clear plastic type, and the other is the typical Hawley with metal. I use a little machine to clean them, it's a little bowl that I put water and a powder cleaner in. I'm starting not to like the cleaner, it's smells chemically and doesn't rinse off too easy. I was thinking maybe a vinegar water mix maybe? But with the metal in the hawley I'm just not sure. Anyone have any ideas? Being an adult that paid for her own braces, I wear these things every night without fail, I just can't stand the ick factor.
